Top 100 Countdown: Number 61 Jedd Gyorko (West Virginia)

JeddGyrkoHeadShot The CBB continues our countdown for the 2010 College Baseball season by checking in on the Top 100 Players in the country. We will be providing one player per day until we reach number 1.

We continue the list today with number 61 in our countdown with West Virginia junior shortstop Jedd Gyorko. He is a 5-10 185 pound shortstop from Morgantown West Virginia where he played at University High School. He was a four-time all-conference and three-time all-state player while being the 2007 Conference Hitter of the Year.

 

Gyorko came right into the West Virginia program as a freshman starting all 56 games while having a .409 average with eight homers and 63 RBI. He finished the season with a .612 slugging percentage which was third on the squad. He only struck out 26 times in 232 at bats. He earned several awards during his freshman campaign as he was named  to the Pro-Line Athletic/NCBWA 2008 All-American Second Team, BIG EAST Rookie of the Year, All-BIG EAST Second Team selection, Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American, Pro-Line Athletic/NCBWA Freshman All-American First Team, ECAC 2008 Division I Baseball All-Star First Team, ECAC Rookie of the Year, and Rivals.com Freshman All-American.

He had an even better season in 2009 when he batted .421 with eight homers and 58 RBI. He had an on-base percentage of .487 which was third on the team last year JeddGyorkoWestVirginia while slugging .658 which was second on the squad. He was honored by Louisville Slugger as a Third-Team All-American, First Team All-BIG EAST, Brooks Wallace Award Finalist, and the NCBWA District II Player of the Year. Gyorko played the summer of 2009 in the Cape Cod Baseball League with the Brewster Whitecaps after being cut by the USA National Team. He ended up hitting .323 with five homers and 18 RBI in 34 games while splitting time between second and third base.
