BAVollmuthSouthernMiss The CBB continues our countdown for the 2010 College Baseball season by checking in on the Top 100 Players in the country. We will be providing one player per day until we reach number 1.

We continue the list today with number 66 in our countdown with Southern Miss sophomore shortstop BA Vollmuth. He is from Biloxi, Mississippi where he was a three year captain of the Biloxi High School baseball squad under Kevin Burdine. His senior season saw him hit .390 with six homers and 37 RBI while picking up multiple honors including being named A Clarion Ledger 1st team All-State Selection, Clarion Ledger Dandy Dozen Team and Sun Herald All-South Team. He was even better in his junior year when he batted .423 with eight homers and 36 RBI. He was drafted in the 32nd round by the Houston Astros but decided to head to Southern Miss to play under Corky Palmer for a season and will be playing for Scott Berry this season.

Vollmuth say limited action as a freshman where he appeared in 37 games with 25 starts. He finished the season with a .237 average with eight homers in 28 RBI. He was a little disappointing in the field as he had made eight errors. He spent the summer of 2008 in the Cape Cod Baseball League with the Falmouth Commodores where he hit .230 average with five homers and 18 RBI. He participated in the CCBL All-Star game where he went 1-1 with a run scored for the Western Division. Baseball America rated him the 20th best prospect in the CCBL.

NOTE: As Tom mentioned in the comments, BA hit two homers in an inning in the NCAA Regional Final against Georgia Tech to lead the Eagles to the Super Regionals.

It would’ve been nice if you had mentioned his two HRs in one inning in the Atlanta Regional championship game against Georgia Tech… just saying…

Good to see Vollmuth here. Another Cape visit for me, and he is impressive. There is no doubt he looks the part of a big league 3B. The glove and bat will play at a very high level.

So, he hit .237 as a freshman and .230 in the summer. With a little power. Awesome. To reiterate, when you’ve got guys on here who are close to the Mendoza Line, the list ceases to have any credibility.

BAV: .383, 15 hr, 63 rbi as of May 22nd. Toss in that Louisville Slugger National Hitter of the Week against Rice, too.

BAV: .378, 18 hr, 68 rbi with a .924 fld% as of May 30th to complete his regular season and conference tournament stats. I say he goes no later than the 6th round in the draft this year. If Southern Miss goes deep into the NCAA tournament like last year, giving him more exsposure, and he breaks the 20 hr mark he might be able to sneak up into the 4th round.
