ChrisHernandezMiami The CBB continues our countdown for the 2010 College Baseball season by checking in on the Top 100 Players in the country. We will be providing one player per day until we reach number 1.

We continue the list today with number 72 in our countdown with Miami (FL) junior LHP Chris Hernandez. He is from Miami Florida and went to high school at Monsignor Pace where he was a four year letterwinner including being named All-State twice. His senior season saw him go 7-2 with a 0.87 ERA while striking out 106 batters. The Detroit Tigers selected him in the 14th round of the 2007 draft but could not come to terms with him which sent Chris to the University of Miami.

Hernandez made an immediate impact with the Miami Hurricanes in 2008 in which he had one of the best pitching seasons in the history of the program. He went 11-0 with a 2.62 ERA in 17 starts while pitching in a team high 112.2 innings. He was named the NCBWA National Freshman Pitcher of the Year, Collegiate Baseball Newspaper National Freshman Pitcher the of Year, and many other awards. He played the summer of 2008 with the USA Collegiate National Team as the team went a perfect 24-0. Hernandez made five appearances (3 starts) accumulating a 2-0 record with a 1.69 ERA in 16 innings of work.

He had a disappointing sophomore season where he went 7-5 with a 4.76 ERA in 15 starts while pitching in a team high 90.2 innings. He finished the season with 93 strikeouts and opponents had a .275 average against him.

We believe that Hernandez will return to his form from the 2008 season when he was one of the best pitchers in the nation and has overcome his struggles from the 2009 season.

I am a little surprised he is this far down the list. I know that he had a disappointing season last year, but I think he was adjusting to being the man on that staff and knowing that the amount of help behind him wasn’t the same as the year before. I think he reverts back to All-ACC form this year, and gets double digit wins. (Wasn’t there also some reports of a nagging shoulder injury that he was dealing with?)

Yes, I think there were reports about that shoulder injury.

We should see what happens. Chris could battle with GT’s McGuire for ACC Pitcher of the Year if he returns to his freshman form.

Guys I love Hernandez and love the ACC, lets also keep an eye on the lefty Manno @Duke, was pursued big time by the nationals, and is a solid 6″3 lefty. Love his make up and love his stuff
