Oregon State Signee Showcase: Brian Pointer

Brian Pointer recently signed his national letter of intent to join the Oregon State baseball team for the 2011 season. He is a native of Reno, Nev., and attends Galena High School.

As a junior, he posted 11 home runs, 41 walks, 14 stolen bases and 33 RBI. He was named first-team all-league after last season, also earning first-team all-league honors his sophomore season. Pointer is related to Allie Reynolds, who pitched in the Major Leagues from 1942-54 with the New York Yankees. His grandfather, Arnold, played football and baseball at Oklahoma.

Maryland releases 2010 Schedule

EricPotterMaryland COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The University of Maryland released its 2010 baseball schedule on Monday, which includes 23 games against 2009 NCAA Tournament teams, 13 of which are home contests.

The schedule includes a total of 31 home games at Shipley Field at Bob "Turtle" Smith Stadium. The conference slate looks to be particularly tough, as Maryland faces all seven Atlantic Coast Conference teams that made the NCAA Tournament in 2009.

Duke releases 2010 Schedule

DBAP DURHAM, N.C. - Nine series against NCAA Regional qualifiers from 2009 highlight a challenging 2010 Duke baseball schedule, as announced by head coach Sean McNally on Wednesday.

In one of the program’s most loaded schedules in recent history, Duke will take on College World Series participants North Carolina and Virginia, NCAA Super Regional qualifiers Clemson and Florida State and NCAA Regional teams Baylor, Georgia, Boston College, Miami and Georgia Tech.

We continue the list today with number 51 in our countdown with Kansas junior RHP TJ Walz. He is from Omaha Nebraska as he attended Skutt Catholic High School. He picked up three letters playing under head coach Keith Englekamp. His senior season saw him go 11-1 with a 1.81 ERA while striking out 136 batters in 81 innings.

Virginia gives back to community

JarrettParkerUVAWorking CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia baseball team gave back to the community on Sunday morning (Nov. 22) by helping to revitalize a local youth baseball field in honor of Carson Raymond, a local 9-year-old who passed away in October from severe flu-like symptoms. UVa helped in the project at Woodbrook Elementary School, where Carson was a third-grade student.

We continue the list today with number 53 in our countdown with Duke senior LHP Christopher Manno. He is from Brooklyn New York and attended Xaverian High School in New York. He had an outstanding high school career as a senior he hit .515 with nine home runs, 55 RBI and 34 stolen bases and went 5-1 with a 0.66 ERA and 95 strikeouts as he earned first team all-city accolades.

WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – During the national signing period, the Monmouth University Baseball program added eight student-athletes to its 2011 class, head coach Dean Ehehalt recently announced. Signing National Letters of Intent to play at Monmouth were Tim Bickford (Wallingford, Conn./Mark Sheehan), Frank Fantino (Nanuet, N.Y./St. Joseph’s – Montvale), Stephen Frey (Washingtonville, N.Y./Washingtonville), Jake Gronsky (Danville, Pa./Danville), Jonathan Guida (Martinsville, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan), Andrew McGee (Toms River, N.J./Toms River South), Craig Sweeney (Middletown, N.J./Middletown South) and Tom Valichka (Pennsville, N.J./St. Mark’s[Del.]).

Parker using Baseball skills on Gridiron

KyleParkerClemson The Herald out of Rock Hill South Carolina has put out an interesting preview of the Clemson and South Carolina football game on Saturday. The starting quarterback for the Clemson Tigers is Kyle Parker who is a redshirt freshman quarterback for football team while he will be a junior in this upcoming spring for the baseball squad. He entered Clemson in the spring of 2008 to take part in Spring Practice for the football squad and ended up participating in a majority of the baseball games in addition to his football duties.

We continue the list today with number 54 in our countdown with Georgia Tech junior shortstop Derek Dietrich. He is from Parma Ohio and attended St. Ignatius (Jesuit Prep) High School where he was a four-year letterwinner. He had a career high school batting average of .425 with 18 homers and 125 RBI. He received several awards during his high school career including being named the Ohio Gatorade Player of the Year, No. 1 draft prospect for Ohio, and the Perfect Game Ohio Player of the Year in 2007. He was named a high school All-American by Baseball America and Louisville Slugger. He was selected in the third round of the 2007 MLB Draft by the Houston Astros but could not come to terms with them as he headed south to play for Danny Hall at Georgia Tech.

We continue the list today with number 55 in our countdown with San Diego junior RHP Kyle Blair. He is from from Monte Sereno, California where he attended Los Gatos High School. In his junior year of high school, Blair had an outstanding record of 13-1 with an ERA of 0.16 allowing only two earned runs in 89.2 innings of work. His senior season saw him go 9-2 with a 0.31 ERA and racking up 147 strikeouts, This type of performance was good enough to be selected by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the fifth round, but he turned down the money by honoring his commitment to the San Diego program.

Southern Illinois adds 10 for 2010-2011 Season

CARBONDALE, Ill. – Southern Illinois head baseball coach Dan Callahan announced Wednesday that the Salukis have signed 10 student-athletes to National Letters of Intent to play baseball and attend school beginning in the fall of 2010.

The Salukis inked nine high school athletes and one from the junior college ranks. Of the 10 signees, six are pitchers (one left-hander and five right-handers), two are infielders and there is one catcher and one outfielder in the class.
