It took three games, but the veteran laden Red team finally scored their first victory of Texas Tech’s annual Red vs. Black series on Wednesday at Dan Law Field in Lubbock, Texas. Thanks to an offensive outburst in the fifth and sixth innings, the 9-8 victory moved the series record to 2-1 in favor of the Black Squad.
Freshman catcher Bo Altobelli led the attack with a trio of hits, including a two-run double in the fifth, and three RBI. Every player on the Red Squad collected at least one hit, with Junior College transfer Stephen Hagen adding a pair of his own. The Black Squad saw home runs from UTPA transfer Bonham Hough and sophomore Kevin Whitehead in the losing effort. Whitehead’s two hits and four RBI were tops on the team.
In a scenario that could only happen in a scrimmage, sophomore Colton Farrar picked up the win for the Red Squad, and relieved freshman Joseph Burnett, who picked up the loss for the Black Squad. Farrar allowed five runs on six hits for the Red Squad, and only gave up a single in an inning and a third for the Black Squad. Red starter Scott Erzinger, a former team manager, allowed three hits and three runs in two innings, before giving way to freshman Brandon Petite. Petite threw two scoreless innings, picking up three strikeouts in his first inning of work. Junior Justin Cooper, a transfer from Vernon College, pitched the first four innings for the Black Squad, allowing a pair of unearned runs. Sophomore Ben Flora followed, allowing four runs on four hits in his only inning of work.
Texas Tech continues their Red & Black Series on Wednesday at 5:00 PM at Dan Law Field. Attendance is free.
