CBB Visit: Texas outscores Baylor 10-8 in a fall exhibition

RussellMoldenhauer AUSTIN, Texas – The Texas Longhorns outscored the Baylor Bears 10-8 in a scheduled 14-inning baseball exhibition game on Sunday afternoon at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.

Russell Moldenhauer picked up where he left off in Omaha last June. Moldenhauer, who hit four home runs in six games at the 2009 College World Series, went 3-for-4 with two home runs, one walk, one hit-by-pitch, four runs and four RBI. Jonathan Walsh and Tant Shepherd each drove in a pair of runs for the Longhorns. Walsh’s two RBI came on a 13th-inning home run to give Texas the 10-8 lead.

Both teams scored in the first inning with Baylor touching home on a Max Muncy RBI single and a Texas error and the Longhorns responding with a two-run home run to rightfield by Moldenhauer.

Baylor took a 5-2 lead in the third inning. Wes Mercurio hit a leadoff single and Cal Towey was hit by a pitch to set up a three-run homer by Muncy.

Texas knotted the game at 5-5 with three runs in the fourth. With one out, Moldenhauer drew a walk and Rupp was hit by a pitch. Connor Rowe plated Moldenhauer with a single through the left side and Tant Shepherd tied the game with a two-run double down the leftfield line.

The Longhorns took its first lead of the game in the eighth inning when Moldenhauer hit a solo blast into the visitor’s bullpen in leftfield for the 6-5 advantage.

Baylor tied the game at 6-6 in the ninth when Chris Slater deposited an equalizer over the leftfield fence.

The score ballooned to 8-8 when both teams scored two runs in the 10th inning. Towey hit a two-run home run down the rightfield line for Baylor. For Texas, Jordan Etier singled through the left side, stole second base and scored on a triple by Kevin Keyes. The Longhorns tied the score when Moldenhauer grounded out to shortstop to plate Keyes.

With one out in the 13th inning, Moldenhauer was hit by a pitch and Walsh followed with his two-run dinger.

Chance Ruffin and Cole Green put in the strongest performance on the mound for the Longhorns. Ruffin pitched two perfect innings, striking out three of the six batters he faced. Green also pitched two scoreless innings, allowing one hit and striking out one. Josh Urban, Sam Stafford and Stayton Thomas each pitched scoreless innings.

The Longhorns play their second of two fall exhibitions next Sunday when they host the Texas State Bobcats in a Noon contest at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.
