LandryHeadshot The CBB continues our countdown for the 2010 College Baseball season by checking in on the Top 100 Players in the country. We will be providing one player per day until we reach number 1.

We continue the list today with number 91 in our countdown with LSU junior outfielder Leon Landry. He is 5’11 and 197 pounds out of Baton Rouge, LA and Baker High School. He was a three sport athlete in high school playing basketball, football, and baseball. He excelled in baseball as he was named first team all-district in three consecutive seasons as a pitcher and infielder. Perfect Game rated him as one of the top players in the Southeast region which saw him get selected by the Cincinnati Reds in the 36th round. He declined to sign with the Reds and headed to LSU.

He ended up appearing in 63 games (57 starts) during his freshman campaign in 2008 where he hit .271 with 10 doubles, five triples, five homers, 26 RBI and 12 landry_leonsteals. He spent the summer of 2008 in the Cal Ripken Sr. League where he played for Youse’s Maryland Orioles. Landry finished the season with a .304 average with four doubles, two triples, 16 RBI and 17 runs in 20 games. Baseball America named him the Top Prospect in the league at the end of the season.

Landry continued to see major time in the field in 2009 as he played in 59 games (42 starts). His average for the season was .300 with 10 doubles, 12 homers, 41 RBI, and nine stolen bases. In the summer of 2009, Landry played in the Cape Cod Baseball League with the Harwich Mariners. He finished the season with a .364 average with four doubles, two homers, 12 RBI, and six stolen bases in 24 games. Baseball America rated him the 14th best prospect in the league.

The one area that really can’t be measured with Leon Landry by looking at stats is his defensive prowess as he really chases down a ton of balls in the outfield taking away base hits. He has made six errors in his first two college seasons but that stat is skewed.  You can check out some video of his defense by watching the video at the bottom of the page.

Landry would have to be much higher in my book.

Are you kidding me 91? All Leon have to do is get the chance to play like everyone else have on the team and don’t be screwed around of being taken in and out of the game. He hit .364 with a wooden bat can you imagine what he can do with aluminum? Try your rating again as for defense superb! He was just shuffled to the outfield because of the university he goes to he can play infield also. Just a tip for the critics!

I most definitely agree, i’ve been watching Lil Landry since he was a kid and he’s just flat out an athlete and can play anywhere on the field!! He’s gonna be even more valuable on a team that lost some key players and that is trying to repeat as Nation Champs! So honestly he is a top 50 player in my book EASILY!!!

As we all know, Landry can go either way….up or down during the season. He needs to be more consistent to be considered higher.

For the people who truly know and support him, we are amazed at how his tremendous talent keeps reaching new heights. No matter how much they try to stop it from happening he always shines. Kick ass and shut all the haters up this season Twinny!

“As we all know”??? Brian, at least one-third of your first 40+ players mentioned have done diddledeesquat so far in college. Those guys haven’t been “up and down”; they’ve yet to be up. Period. But I guess since the scouting community loves ’em, and they had great high school careers, they belong in EVERYONE’s Top 100 list? We all know this. Geez.

Walt,

You have a problem with Landry being this low or even on this list? His stats are not that outstanding besides this past summer in the CCBL!

Brian, I have no problem at all with Landry being on the list, and I probably would have placed him in the #80 – 90 range. Again, unlike you, I put far more emphasis on actual D-I college performance to date than on high school and Summer League results, or potential. Landry is a bit hit or miss at the plate, but he’s a 5-tool guy who has already demonstrated his potential at the D-I level, despite not yet being an everyday player. IMO, I’d rate him far higher than 15 – 20 guys you have ranked above him based soley on potential, and who have yet to demonstrate squat at the D-I level.

Litonia Landry, you are now starting to show your Baton Rouge ignorance..He can play the infield too? Oh yeah what position, he is left-handed…Not too many major league teams want a 5 10 (and yes he is no taller than that) first basemen…..He is a decent player, that will NEVER see the show sorry…Way too inconsistent…
