JeremySchaffer The CBB continues our countdown for the 2010 College Baseball season by checking in on the Top 100 Players in the country. We will be providing one player per day until we reach number 1.

We continue the list today with number 98 in our countdown with Tulane sophomore catcher Jeremy Schaffer. He is from Bellaire Texas where he attended Bellaire High School. He was a four year letter winner in high school where he hit .404 with eight homers and 40 RBI in his senior campaign.

He came right into the Tulane program and became an instant contributor where he played in 57 games making starts in all of them. He finished the season with a .311 average while hitting 14 homers and 56 RBI. He also only struck out 35 times in his 212 plate appearances which is impressive for a freshman. He was also solid defensively as he threw out 28.1 percent of base runners last season. Louisville Slugger named him a Freshman All-American for his strong season.

This summer he saw some limited action with the USA Collegiate National Team where he played in five games (one start) while hitting .222 with two RBI in nine plate appearances.

I can’t believe you ranked Schaffer behind Cameron Rupp of Texas. Rupp doesn’t have close to the skills of Schaffer. All he has is power and it is inconsistent at that. Schaffer ‘s stats outrank his in almost every category. Just because he plays for a better team does not make him a better player. Pro scouts will certainly rank Schaffer ahead.

Lawrence,

I think Rupp and Schaffer are on par– with Schaffer certainly being the superior defensive catcher. Rupp has yet to hit up to his potential, and plays in a much more pitcher-friendly home park (not to mention playing to a considerably tougher SoS)…but he has still been solid offensively. He has more power potential than Schaffer. Having said that, Schaffer is definately the real deal and a very, very good college player (and pro prospect).

I’ve seen Schaffer and Rupp play. Schaffer has the intangibles that every coach wants in a player. On top of everything, he’s a WINNER. Great college player, potentially better pro player. He’ll be a steal for sure.
