San Diego State rounds out Coaching Staff

EricValenzuela SAN DIEGO – San Diego State Head Baseball Coach Tony Gwynn has announced the hiring of Eric Valenzuela to the position of Aztec pitching coach. Valenzuela comes to SDSU from the University of San Diego where he served as the Toreros’ pitching coach the past six seasons. Gwynn also revealed that former SDSU player Brock Ungricht will assume duties as the program’s volunteer assistant coach for the upcoming campaign.

Known as a standout recruiter and instructor, Valenzuela was a key component in the success of USD baseball in recent years and was instrumental in the development of the Torero pitching staff into one of the finest in the nation. He made an immediate impact during his first season at USD in 2004 as the Torero mound corps led the West Coast Conference in team ERA. Valenzuela spearheaded the recruiting efforts for the 2008 USD recruiting class that was ranked the nation’s best by Baseball America. He was also the catalyst for the 2006 recruiting class that was among Baseball America’s Dandy Dozen.

Bethune-Cookman, Wofford Unveil 2010 Schedules

bcu_thumb Bethune-Cookman has released its tentative 2010 schedule.  BCU will begin the campaign by taking part in the MLB Urban Classic Tournament (Feb. 19-21) with games against UCLA, Loyola Marymount, and Southern.  From there, the team will travel to Jacksonville (Feb. 23) for a mid-week contest before visiting Lubbock, Texas, for a double round robin tournament with Texas Tech and Washington State (Feb. 26-28).

BCU will then face off against Stetson (March 2) and Jacksonville (March 3) at home before heading to Troy (March 5-7) for a weekend series.  Before opening conference play at Florida A&M (March 20-21), Bethune-Cookman will have home games against Wagner (March 9-10, March 12), USF (March 14), VCU (March 14), and Stetson (March 16).

Megahee added to Auburn Coaching Staff

TyMegahee AUBURN, Ala. – Ty Megahee has joined the Auburn baseball staff for the 2009-10 season, Auburn Head Coach John Pawlowski announced on Tuesday. Megahee was previously at Monmouth University as an assistant coach/recruiting coordinator, helping the team to a regional appearance in 2009.

"We are very fortunate to have Ty Megahee join the Auburn baseball program. His experience as an assistant coach, recruiting coordinator and a trip to the NCAA Regionals last year will certainly help us as we continue to move the program forward," Pawlowski said.

UC Irvine Releases 2010 Schedule

UC-IrvineBaseball IRVINE, Calif. — Three first-time opponents dot the 2010 UC Irvine baseball schedule as announced today by head coach Mike Gillespie.

UC Irvine opens the season against Loyola Marymount Feb. 19-21, and then travels to Myrtle Beach, SC, to compete in the Coastal Carolina Tournament. The games will be played at BB&T Coastal Field, home of the Myrtle Beach Pelicans, the advanced-A affiliate of the Atlanta Braves. UCI takes on the Chanticleers Thursday (Feb. 25) and Saturday (Feb. 27) in their first-ever meetings and also tackle first-time opponents North Carolina State (Feb. 26) and James Madison (Feb. 28) in tournament action.

Southern Utah, High Point Release 2010 Schedules

HighPointPhot The Southern Utah Thunderbirds have released the schedule for their 2010 campaign.  The team will begin the season with a mid-week road game against UNLV (Feb. 23) before the home opener against Utah Valley (Feb. 26-27).  The Thunderbirds then travel to Lewiston, Idaho, to take part in the Banana Belt Tournament (March 4-7).  The team returns home for a weekend set against Kennesaw State (March 12-13) which will be followed by a season long ten game road trip where Southern Utah will take on San Diego State (March 16-17), Oregon State (March 25), Portland (March 26-28), Oregon (March 30), and Utah Valley (April 2-3).

Erik Bakich taking Aggressive Approach

EricBakich Yes, I post too much about new Maryland coach Erik Bakich but it seems that every time there is an article on him, we find a great quote in it from the new Maryland coach. The most recent article from The Diamondback Online talks with Coach Bakich about his aggressive style in recruiting the best players and coaches to College Park MD as he tries to turn around UMD program. He ended up getting one of the top pitching coaches in Sean Kenny from Pepperdine who agreed to come across the country to sleep on an air mattress in Bakich’s apartment for the last two weeks.

Valpo Announces 2010 Slate

ValpoCelebration-Butler228 Valparaiso University coach Tracy Woodson has released the 2010 baseball schedule, which has the Crusaders playing 20 home games at Emory G. Bauer Field in addition to three games at the U.S. Steel Yard in Gary, Ind.

Valpo will face a pair of Big Ten foes in Indiana (Apr. 13) and Northwestern (May 4) at the U.S. Steel Yard in addition to an April 28 game against Notre Dame.  The Crusaders will also be hosting the Horizon League Championships at the home of the Gary SouthShore RailCats May 26-30 this season.

Oregon looking to improve in Year 2

CoachHortonOregon Bob Clark of The Register Guard checked in on Oregon’s first practice of the fall season on Monday. He talked with Coach Horton about how the program is developing after a 14-42 season in 2009. The Ducks have brought in 11 freshmen with five junior college transfers as the coaching staff continues to improve the baseball program.

Taylor Ratliff commits to Jacksonville

TaylorRatliff Taylor County High School baseball player Taylor Ratliff has orally committed to Jacksonville University over Florida State, Florida, and Troy University. In the Tallahassee Democrat article Ratliff states the following on his decision “They said I have all the ability and there isn’t any reason I shouldn’t start as a freshman, I will go in there with a good mindset and hopefully start as soon as I can.”

The Toreros’ schedule features yet another strong caliber of opponents, much like the 2009 season. San Diego will face 11 NCAA Tournament participants including the University of Oklahoma, Rice, Coastal Carolina, Gonzaga, Indiana, UC Irvine, Cal State Fullerton, Arizona State, San Diego State, and Fresno State to highlight USD’s schedule. The Toreros will compete in 26 games against this top competition.

Seton Hall, Utah, Toledo Announce 2010 Schedules

SetonHallPirates The Seton Hall Pirates’ 53 game schedule will feature thirty games at Owen T. Carroll Field.  The Pirates begin the season with nine games away from home including road series at Texas A&M (Feb. 19-21) and William & Mary (Feb. 5-7) as well as three games in the Big East/Big Ten Challenge (Feb. 26-28) in Clearwater, Florida.  Seton Hall’s home opener will be as hosts of the SHU Strike Out Cancer Tournament (March 12-14) where the team will play games against NJIT, Iona, and Lafayette.

Washington, Louisville, Ohio State start Fall Ball

WashingtonBaseball The Washington Huskies and Louisville Cardinals have started up Fall Practice for the 2010 season.

Washington starts Fall Practice

SEATTLE – The Washington baseball team opened its fall practice season today. The Huskies, under first-year head coach Lindsay Meggs, will spend the next four weeks on the field at Husky Ballpark in preparation for the 2010 season.

The first day of school at the UW isn’t until Sept. 30, so until that day, the Diamond Dawgs will hold two-a-day practices most days. After school starts, practices will be held once a day with the fall season wrapping up with the Alumni Game on Sunday, Oct. 11.
