Lamar set to start practice on Monday

BrianTaylor BEAUMONT, Texas – Jim Gilligan borrowed one of legendary University of Texas football coach Darrell Royals’s favorite sayings in assessing the prospects for his 2010 Lamar University baseball team.

"Darrell used to say the definition of a guy who has potential is that he’s a guy who hasn’t done it yet," said Gilligan.

When Gilligan’s 2010 hopefuls hit the Vincent-Beck Stadium field for their first of 20 fall practices Monday afternoon, they’ll be loaded with guys who have "potential." It’ll be up to the 34th-season head coach and his assistants to identify the guys who truly have the abilities "to do it."

Army’s Joe Sottolano named Regional Coach of the Year

JoeSottolano West Point, N.Y. – Veteran Army baseball coach Joe Sottolano has been named the ABCA/Diamond Sports Company NCAA Division I Regional Coach of the Year, it was recently announced.

Sottolano will be formally recognized when the American Baseball Coaches Association hosts its annual convention in Dallas January 7-10. The Hall of Fame/Coach of the Year Banquet is scheduled for Jan. 8.

Sottolano is being recognized following the Black Knights historic run to an NCAA Regional Final.

UTSA finalizes 2010 Coaching Staff

JLYVYEXACQVDOPS.20080328204248 SAN ANTONIO — UTSA head baseball coach Sherman Corbett announced Friday that he has promoted Brett Lawler to assistant coach and Josh Lee has joined the program as a volunteer assistant.

Lawler, who has been the Roadrunners’ volunteer coach the last two seasons, replaces Mike Clement, who accepted a position with Texas A&M last month. The College Station native will work with the team’s hitters and mentor the catchers and outfielders defensively.

University of Houston Releases 2010 Schedule

HoustonBaseball HOUSTON – Seven home series highlight the University of Houston 2010 baseball schedule that was announced by head coach Rayner Noble on Tuesday. The Cougars kickoff the 2010 campaign on Feb. 19-21 with a series against Texas State at Cougar Field.

The Cougars, no stranger to competition, will face off against 10 teams that reached an NCAA Regional, including two that played in the College World Series.

After opening the season against the Bobcats, the Cougars welcome Santa Clara to Cougar Field on Feb. 26-27.

New Mexico finalizes 2009-2010 Freshmen Class

RayBirminghamNewMexico ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.– University of New Mexico baseball coach Ray Birmingham and his staff have announced the signing of four more UNM baseball players. Freshmen Oscar Almeida, Arthur Nelson and Zak Miller and transfer Mike Lachapelle have signed National Letters of Intent to play with the University of New Mexico. All four were brought in for their abilities to touch 90 mph on the radar gun.

Matt Marron added to Stony Brook staff

MattSenk Stony Brook, N.Y. – Stony Brook head baseball coach, Matt Senk, announced on Thursday that Mike Marron has been named an assistant coach. Marron, who comes to Seawolves after four years as an assistant coach at UMass-Lowell, will serve as the pitching coach in addition to helping with recruiting.

"We’re extremely excited to have Mike join our staff," Senk said. "He brings passion, success and an outstanding work ethic that will enhance the pitching staff and our program overall."

Michigan announces 2010 Slate

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — University of Michigan head baseball coach Rich Maloney announced Thursday (Sept. 17) a 55-game 2010 schedule, which stacks up among the most challenging in his eight-year tenure with the Wolverines. The slate features six NCAA tournament qualifiers from a year ago.

NCAA President Myles Brand passes away

 036 Myles Brand who served as the NCAA President since 2003 passed away from Pancreatic cancer on Wednesday. He was diagnosed in January and fought the disease with great effort but sadly passed away yesterday. He will be known nationally for firing legendary Indiana basketball coach Bobby Knight when Brand was the President of Indiana. Knight choked one of his players during a practice which led to the firing. On the baseball side of things was a key component in keeping the NCAA baseball season at it’s current 56 game limit but currently we don’t know what the new president of the NCAA will do during their tenure.

Iowa finalizes 2009-2010 Class

IowaBaseball The University of Iowa baseball team welcomes several new faces this fall including Mike Corbeil, Kevin Gates and Kurt Lee.

Corbeil, a Chesterfield, MO, native, is an incoming freshman infielder. He was a two-time all-state, all-district and all-conference selection his two years on the Marquette High School varsity squad. Corbeil’s senior season he hit .453 with four home runs and 37 RBI. In his career at Marquette he set the career RBI record, with 54. Corbeil was part of the 2008 Suburban West Conference Championship team and partook in the Junior Sunbelt Games.

Long Time Florida coach Dave Fuller passes away

DaveFuller Dave Fuller, the winningest baseball coach in University of Florida history, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 15, at North Florida Regional Hospital in Gainesville. He was 94.

“Coach Fuller’s loyalty and dedication to the coaching profession, and his love of the University of Florida, will always be remembered,” said UF Director of Athletics Jeremy Foley. “He had a significant positive influence on countless athletes, coaches and administrators.”

Fuller guided the Gator baseball program from 1948-75, producing a record of 557-354-6 and SEC Championships in 1952, 1956 and 1962, and he was selected as SEC Coach of the Year all three years. His clubs also won four Eastern Division titles, and played in four NCAA Regional tournaments.
