JohnMcGorty POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – Marist head baseball coach Chris Tracz has announced the hiring of John McGorty as assistant baseball coach. McGorty played with the Red Foxes from 2002-03, and still holds the program’s career record for putouts and total chances while ranking second in fielding percentage.

In 2002, McGorty was the starting first baseman on the Marist team which won a program-record 41 games and won an opening-round NCAA Regional game for the only time in program history. In his two years with the Red Foxes, he hit .312 with 10 home runs and 91 runs batted in. He also stole 10 bases, belted 33 doubles and scored 83 runs. In the field, he recorded 910 putouts and had 1,004 total chances, compiling a .988 fielding percentage. McGorty was named First Team All-MAAC in 2002 and Second Team All-MAAC in 2003.

Following the 2003 season, McGorty was selected by the Detroit Tigers in the 36th round of the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft. He played with the Oneonta Tigers of the New York-Penn League that summer.

McGorty has spent the past three seasons as an assistant coach at Division II Dowling College. The last two seasons, he served as third base coach, hitting coach and fielding coach. In 2009, Dowling made its first appearance in the College World Series, defeating top-ranked UC San Diego in its opening round before falling to eventual national champion Lynn University.

Dowling has also been ranked in the nation’s top 30 in fielding percentage each of the last two years, ranking ninth in 2008 and 28th this past season. Since McGorty arrived at Dowling, seven players have gone on to play professional baseball, and two position players (Billy Mottram, Chicago Cubs, 2007 and David Wendt, Tampa Bay Rays, 2009) have been taken in the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft.

"I am excited to have John joining our staff," Tracz said. "He shares our passion for Marist College and the vision for our baseball program. The success he enjoyed as a player in college and professional baseball will be invaluable in his instruction, teaching and mentoring of our student-athletes."

In 2009, the Marist baseball team advanced to an NCAA Regional for the sixth time in program history and the fifth time this decade.
