GeorgiaSouthern STATESBORO, Ga. – Georgia Southern Baseball, the defending Southern Conference Tournament champion, will play 34 games at J.I. Clements Stadium in 2010. Head coach Rodney Hennon announced the schedule on Friday (Sept. 11). Last year marked the 12th time in program history Georgia Southern advanced to the NCAA Regionals (#2 seed at Fullerton Regional).

The Eagles (42-17 overall, 20-8 SoCon last year) open the season playing 14 of their first 16 games at home, starting February 19-21 against Tennessee Tech. The series against the Golden Eagles is one of six GS will play against teams that qualified for the 2009 NCAA Regionals (Georgia Tech, Clemson, South Carolina, Elon and Jacksonville).

Following a two-game series versus Georgia Tech (Feb. 23-24), the Eagles play host to Holy Cross (Feb. 27-March 1). The first road game of the season is a trip to North Florida (March 2).

On March 5-7, GS will face Marshall in a three-game series at Clements Stadium. Following a midweek game at Charleston Southern (March 10), another home-and-home series, GS opens SoCon play against Appalachian State (March 12-14) to close out the extended stay at home.

The Eagles travel to Kennesaw State (March 16) and Clemson (March 17) before playing a three-game series at Wofford (March 19-21). Georgia Southern will play host to South Carolina on March 23 then faces UNC Greensboro at Clements Stadium on March 26-28.

UNF returns the trip to Statesboro (March 30), the Eagles travel to the College of Charleston that weekend (April 2-4) then play host to Kennesaw on April 6.

A rematch of the SoCon title game takes place April 9-11 when the Eagles travel to Elon. Jacksonville (April 13) and Samford (April 16-18) visit J.I. Clements Stadium the following week.

Georgia Southern returns the trip to Atlanta facing the Yellow Jackets on April 20-21, before returning home again to square off against Western Carolina (April 23-25).

The Eagles return to Jacksonville on April 27 then play at Furman April 30-May 2. Alcorn State, the final non-conference opponent, will play a doubleheader at J.I. Clements on May 9 before a single-game on the 10th to close out the three-game series. GS closes out the four-game homestand on the 11th against Charleston Southern.

Georgia Southern travels to Davidson (May 13-15) before closing out the regular season at home versus The Citadel on May 20-22. The Southern Conference Tournament returns to Riley Park in Charleston, S.C. beginning on May 26th.

"Our goal every year is to play a challenging non-conference schedule to help prepare us for Southern Conference play. This year is no different," said Hennon. "We will face six teams that qualified for the NCAA Regionals, 14 of our 56 games, and the SoCon continues to improve. Last year we were one of two teams in the league to win 40 games and six won at least 30. I expect the SoCon will rank again as one of the top conferences in the country."

I have always tought GS was a D-2 team. Is that correct? That sure is a tought “play up” to D-1 schedule if they are in fact D-2.
