Georgia releases 2010 Schedule

GrimmandMayugA ATHENS, Ga. — For the first time since 2002 when the David Perno era began, the Georgia Bulldog baseball team will open a season on the road.

The college baseball season begins Feb. 19, and the Bulldogs will be in Waco, Texas where they will start with a doubleheader against Duke and Baylor. The Bulldogs will play a total of four games in Waco before returning for their home opener at Foley Field against Presbyterian on Feb. 24 followed by a three-game set with Stetson to close out the month. The 56-game regular season features 29 home games.

Todd Cunningham named CCBL Top Pro Prospect

AW_ToddCunningham_ProPospect FALMOUTH, Mass.—On a night when it seemed to be raining hardware in Falmouth, Todd Cunningham (Jacksonville State) was also distinguished as the Pro-Prospect of the Year. The scouts, using the simple criteria of who will make the biggest major league impact in their career, vote on the Robert A. McNeece Pro Prospect of the Year Award.

Cunningham joins a group of recognizable names from Cape League History and Major League Baseball. Matt Wieters (Georgia Tech) won the award with Orleans back in 2006 and is now in the discussion for American League Rookie of the Year with the Baltimore Orioles. Mark Teixeira(Georgia Tech) of Orleans and Billy Wagner (Ferrum) of Brewster are both former winners of this prestigious award.

Indiana State names Rick Heller as Head Coach

RickHeller TERRE HAUTE, Ind. — Indiana State Director of Athletics Ron Prettyman announced today (Aug. 14) the hiring of Rick Heller as the 28th head baseball coach in the 113-year history of the Sycamore program.

“It is with great excitement that we announce the addition of Rick Heller as head baseball coach at Indiana State,” Prettyman said. “Coach Heller’s teams have had a tremendous history of success both on the field and in the classroom. We welcome coach Heller and his wife Rachelle to the Sycamore family and look forward to his leadership of our baseball program.”

West Coast League Final: Corvallis Knights vs. Wenatchee Apple Sox

The best-of-three championship series starts in Wenatchee, WA on Saturday, August 15. Buckeye Nine talks with Zach Hurley

ZachHurleyOhioState Chris Webb of Buckeye Nine recently posted an excellent Q and A with Ohio State outfielder Zach Hurley. He was selected in the 45th round of the 2009 MLB Draft by the Florida Marlins. Hurley’s stock tumbled after an injury to his throwing shoulder during fall workouts. He played every game in the 2009 season missing only one game but was never 100 percent. You really could not tell though as Hurley had an outstanding season hitting .346 with six homers and 53 RBI.

Wiswall named Top New England Prospect in CCBL

AW_ NEProProspect S. YARMOUTH, Mass.— Mickey Wiswall (BC) not only grew up in New England, but still attends school here in Massachusetts at Boston College. The Stoneham, Mass. native made for a perfect choice for this year’s John Claffey New England Top Prospect Award, batting .302 in his 43 games this season while playing for the Y-D Red Sox.

The 6-1 infielder played at first base for the Y-D Red Sox this summer, though he traditionally plays third base while at school. With 48 hits, 30 RBI, and only 37 strikeouts in 159 appearances at the plate, Wiswall has been a formidable hitter that quickly became a fan favorite.

CBB Visit: Coppell Copperheads defeat Victoria Generals, 5-3, in Game One of TCL Championship

COPPERHEAD LOGO August 13- If the fences at The Snake Pit in Coppell, Texas were 337 feet, Generals 1B Mike Davis (Lambuth) would’ve given Victoria a 7-5 lead with a grand slam in the top of the 9th. Fortunately for the Copperheads, the fences measured up to 340 feet, giving Copperheads CF James Foster (Wofford) just enough room to make the final out of the game, preserving a 5-3 victory in the first game of the best-of-three Championship Series.

Wichita State removes Astroturf

WichitaStateLogo One of the best moves in College Baseball over the last few years is the removal of Astroturf to either grass or fieldturf surfaces. Wichita State joins the crowd as they are ripping up the old Astroturf at Eck Stadium in favor of a new fieldturf surface. The renovations are currently underway as part of a 3.7 million dollar improvement to the Wichita State Baseball program which also includes a new practice facility. Bucknell adds 8 for 2010 Season

GeneDepew LEWISBURG, Pa. – Just a few weeks before the start of classes, longtime Bucknell baseball head coach Gene Depew announced the program’s latest recruiting class Thursday. The eight members of the talented class will join a team that won the Patriot League regular-season title this past spring.

“I am anticipating a lot of contribution from this talented group of players,” commented Depew. “All eight are very talented players and should complement a strong group of returning players. We are looking forward to the start of our fall program to prepare for the challenge of vying for another Patriot League title.”

Filter added to Stanford Coaching Staff

Filter STANFORD, Calif.– Stanford Baseball announced the hiring of 16-year coaching veteran Rusty Filter as the team’s assistant and pitching coach. Filter, who tutored 2009 National Player of the Year Stephen Strasburg, takes over for Dave Nakama, who was named the top assistant at the University of Washington.

"We are really excited  for Coach Filter to join our staff," said Head Coach Mark Marquess, who will be entering his 34th season in 2010. "We are fortunate to get a coach with his talent and experience to come aboard. I think our pitchers will truly benefit from his pitching philosophy."

Haselman added to Washington Staff

BillHaselman SEATTLE – Former Seattle Mariners catcher Bill Haselman has been named the Washington baseball team’s volunteer assistant coach, completing the staff of new head coach Lindsay Meggs.

Haselman, who spent 13 years in the Major Leagues, joins Meggs and assistant coaches Dave Nakama and Greg Moore on the Washington staff. Haselman will coach the Huskies’ catchers, assist Nakama with the hitting and coach first base during games.
