Breaking News: Strasburg signs with Nationals

Strasburg The national nightmare has come to an end as Stephen Strasburg has signed with the Washington Nationals for 15.67 million over four seasons according to a report by Baseball America’s Aaron Fitt which posted the following tweet.

Aaron Fitt reports Strasburg signs. MLB deal worth $15.67 million over 4 years.

Interesting that he got such a large deal and was only 4.33 million off the 20 million that was getting thrown around over the last few days.

CBB Column: Boras has a strong influence on the MLB Draft

ScottBoras The big story of the day is whether the Washington Nationals are going to sign San Diego State’s Stephen Strasburg by the midnight deadline tonight.  He is not the only one as number 2 selection in UNC’s Dustin Ackley is still unsigned among others. Both of these players are represented by baseball power agent Scott Boras who has become one of the toughest negotiators in the industry over the last few years. This has ended up hurting some players in their negotiations for a contract as many players have slipped down the draft board.

2009 All-Cape Cod Baseball League Team

The Cape Cod Baseball League has put out their 2009 All-Cape League team. It is led by CCBL MVP Kyle Roller from East Carolina and CCBL Top Pitcher Chris Sale from Florida Gulf Coast. The infield features first baseman Mickey Wiswall (Boston College), second baseman Pierre LePage (Uconn), shortstop B.A. Vollmuth (Southern Miss) and third baseman Jedd Gyorko (West Virginia). The two ultility infielders are Zach Cox (Arkansas) and Nick Crawford (UAB). The outfield is led by Todd Cunningham (Jacksonville State). The other four members of the All-League outfield are Gary Brown (CS-Fullerton), Austin Wates (Virginia Tech), Brian Fletcher (Auburn), and George Springer (UConn). The catchers are Mike Murray (Wake Forest) and Cody Stanley (UNC-Wilmington). Ryan Cuneo (Delaware) joins Roller as the All-League Designated Hitters.

Memphis hires Fred Corral as Pitching Coach

FredCorral MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Former University of Tennessee pitching coach Fred Corral has been hired as the associate head coach and pitching coach for the University of Memphis baseball team, head coach Daron Schoenrock announced Monday. Corral replaces former Tiger pitching coach Michael Federico, who took the pitching coach job at Southern Miss in mid-July.

"While it is always difficult to replace an assistant coach with the loyalty, dedication, expertise and people skills that Coach Federico brought to the program, in his five years with us," said Schoenrock. "I feel we’ve really `hit a home run with the hiring of Fred Corral. Fred will have a huge impact on the pitching staff, the entire team and this program. Our pitchers will benefit from Fred’s experience, his teaching techniques and the person that he is. We are truly fortunate to have him at the University of Memphis."

2009 Aflac All-American Game Recap

AflacAll-AmericanGame SAN DIEGO – In a game where the talent was so evenly matched, the outcome of Sunday afternoon’s Aflac All-American High School Baseball Classic was fitting.

A triple down the right field line by Rancho Buena Vista (Calif.) High School shortstop Tony Wolters sent the seventh annual Aflac All-American High School Baseball Classic into extra innings for the first time since the game’s inception in 2003. A unique extra innings format saw both teams score a run in the 10th inning, and the game ended in a 4-all tie Sunday night at Petco Park before a record crowd of 8,027. The overall East vs. West series record for the Aflac All-American Classic, which features 40 of the nation’s premiere high school baseball players, now stands at 3-3-1. Auburn signee Nick Franklin signs with Seattle

NickFranklin Auburn University signee Nick Franklin signed with the Seattle Mariners today according to a report on MLB.com. Franklin was going to be a key infielder for the John Pawlowski led Auburn Tigers for the 2010 season.

Washington’s QB Locker signs with Angels

JakeLocker Washington QB Jake Locker signed a contract today with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. Locker was selected in the 10th round of the June Draft after being selected in the 40th round out of high school. He spent the summer of 2008 in the West Coast Collegiate Baseball League where he played for the Bellingham Bells. He finished the summer with a .273 average including two homers in only ten games.

College of Charleston adds 17 for 2009-2010 school year

CollegeofCharleston College of Charleston baseball coach Monte Lee will welcome 17 new student-athletes for the 2010 season, it was announced on Thursday.

The class is made up of five pitchers, nine position players and three players who pitch and play a position.  The class represents three states (South Carolina, Florida and Georgia), including 12 from the state of South Carolina.

"We are excited about this class and what they bring to our program," said Lee, who enters his second season as coach of the Cougars. "I look forward to this group coming in and competing at a high level."

Kyle Roller named CCBL MVP

AW_MVP BOURNE, Mass.—Kyle Roller (East Carolina) was named the MVP of the Cape Cod Baseball League on Saturday in Bourne. Roller was second to batting champion Todd Cunningham(Jacksonville State) in batting average, which was no failure with Cunningham hitting .378 for the year.    

Outside of the batting title, Roller led almost every statistical category. He hit 10 home runs, his next competitor only amassing eight. He had 33 RBI, three more than anyone else. He piled up 13 doubles, which contributed significantly to his unthinkable .644 slugging percentage. He led the league with 24 extra base hits and, surprisingly, 33 runs scored.

Coppell Copperheads win 2009 TCL Championship with 13-11 victory over Victoria Generals

CoppellChampionship August 14th- For the 3rd time in their six year history, the Coppell Copperheads were crowned Texas Collegiate League Champions on Friday night. With a one game lead in the best-of-three championship series, the Copperheads traveled to Victoria where they defeated the league’s number one seed, 13-11, to clinch the 2009 Championship.

2009 BIG EAST/Big Ten Baseball Challenge Nominated for a SportsTravel Award

field2 BALTIMORE, MD - SportsTravel magazine has announced that the 2009 BIG EAST/Big Ten Baseball Challenge has been nominated for a 2009 SportsTravel Award. Events are nominated and then voted upon by the readers of SportsTravel, the sports world’s event magazine.

The inaugural BIG EAST-Big Ten Baseball Challenge, hosted by the St. Petersburg/Clearwater Sports Commission, concluded to rave reviews from fans, participants, coaches and elected officials in the St. Petersburg/Clearwater area. Approximately 17,000 spectators turned out over three days to watch as eight teams representing the BIG EAST squared off against all 10 of the Big Ten’s baseball-playing institutions in NCAA Division I baseball’s first conference challenge event.

Bernie Walter added to Maryland Staff

BernieWalter COLLEGE PARK, Md. – First-year Maryland head baseball coach Erik Bakich announced today the addition of one of the most well-known baseball minds in the state of Maryland to his staff, as former Arundel High School head coach Bernie Walter will join the Terrapins as director of operations.

"Bernie Walter is a baseball coaching legend and someone I have the utmost respect for," said Bakich. "His accolades and achievements over the past four decades speak for themselves, and his addition solidifies a coaching staff that I am extremely proud of.
