Ball State releases 2010 Schedule

GregBeals MUNCIE, Ind. – Ball State baseball head coach Greg Beals officially released a 56-game schedule for the 2010 season, including 16 games at Ball Diamond. The Cardinals return 16 letterwinners, including six starters and eight pitchers, from the reigning Mid-American Conference West Division championship team.

The Cardinals’ rigorous 29-game non-conference schedule features five NCAA Tournament teams, including one College World Series participant (Arkansas) and one Super Regional participant (Louisville). Ball State’s 19 non-conference foes combined for a .570 (611-461) winning percentage last spring as 15-of-19 posted records above .500.

Arkansas Little-Rock adds 26 for 2010 Roster

UALR LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – The UALR baseball team will have a whole new look in 2010, as head coach Scott Norwood welcomes 26 newcomers for his second season with the Trojans. After signing 10 players in the early period, Norwood’s staff added 16 more newcomers in the spring.

“We feel like we’ve addressed a lot of needs with the players we were able to bring in this season. I expect us to be much more competitive this year,” said Norwood. “With so many new guys, it is going to take a while for them to gel and get to know each other. Hopefully that’s something they can accomplish in the fall.”

Matt Hobbs named Pitching Coach at San Francisco

MattHobbs (San Francisco, CA) – Matt Hobbs has accepted the open pitching coach position at the University of San Francisco, as announced by head coach Nino Giarratano today. Hobbs comes to the Hilltop from UC San Diego, where he held an associate head coaching position for three years.

"We are extremely excited to have Matt Hobbs as a pitching Coach/ recruiting coordinator at the University of San Francisco," said Giarratano. "Matt brings great success, knowledge, and great work habits to our program. Matt will continue to help the program rise."

Long Beach State Sets 2010 Schedule

LongBeachSchedule The Long Beach State Dirtbags have released their 2010 schedule.  The Dirtbags had a down year in 2009, but The Beach looks to get back on the winning track in 2010.  The team will open the season at Blair Field, as they take on Pepperdine (Feb. 19) and Oregon (Feb. 20) before making the trek to Fullerton to battle the Cal State Fullerton Titans (Feb. 21).  The Dirtbags will return home for a mid-week game against UCLA (Feb. 23) and then head to The Grand Canyon State for a weekend set against Arizona (Feb. 26-28).

UCLA Releases 2010 Schedule

UCLABaseballSchedulePic LOS ANGELES – The UCLA baseball team has released its 2010 schedule, which features 23 games against teams that advanced to the 2009 NCAA Tournament, as announced by sixth-year head coach John Savage. UCLA will open the season at home versus Southern University in the MLB Urban Invitational on Friday, Feb. 19.

UCLA’s 56-game regular-season schedule includes at least 32 home contests and 24 games played away from Steele Field at Jackie Robinson Stadium. The Bruins’ home slate is lined by non-conference weekend series versus Nebraska (March 5-7), Oral Roberts (March 19-21) and Cal Poly (March 25-27).

"We’re looking forward to playing another challenging schedule next spring," Savage said.

Butler, Youngstown State Set 2010 Slates

youngstown Head coach Steve Farley enters his 19th season with Butler baseball as the 2010 season approaches.  Coach Farley and the Bulldogs look to improve from a very disappointing 2009 campaign that saw the team finish with a 13-41 record.

The Bulldogs will kick off the season at the Wofford College Tournament (Feb. 26-28) with games against NJIT, Wofford, and South Carolina Upstate.  Butler then returns home for a mid-week game against Indiana Tech (March 3) before travelling to Winter Haven, Florida for their Florida Spring Trip (March 5-11).

Buckley returns to Long Beach State as Pitching Coach

TroyBuckley Mike Weathers of Long Beach State announced on Monday the addition of Troy Buckley to his staff for the 2010 campaign. Buckley previously served as an assistant coach for seven seasons starting in 2002. He left Long Beach State to go to the Pittsburgh Pirates where he served as the coordinator of minor league pitching. Buckley had tons of success at Lon Beach State as he oversaw many star pitchers including three straight Big West Pitchers of the Year from 2002-2004.

Head Coach Mike Weathers says the following about the addition: "Obviously, we’re thrilled to have Troy back with the program. He’s our best recruit of the year, I know this was a difficult decision for him, because he was really enjoying his position with the Pirates. However, I think for his family’s sake and for his future that Long Beach State was the right fit for him."

Eastern Illinois players get program exposure through Summer Leagues

EasternIllinoisSliding Collin Whitchurch of The Daily Eastern News has a good article looking at the summer of the Eastern Illinois baseball players. They had guys in leagues from Cape Cod all the way to Texas. They didn’t disappoint as Josh Mueller had an excellent summer with the Wareham Gatemen which has seen many scouts already calling Eastern Illinois coach Jim Schmitz.

John Leeds named Curly Clement Award Winner (Umpire)

ump2 After officiating for 30 years at various levels of baseball, veteran umpire John Leeds has received the 6th annual Curly Clement Award, presented for officiating excellence and contributions over the years to baseball umpiring in the Cape Cod Baseball League.        

The Clement Award was presented to Leeds during the last week of the regular-season game by Sol Yas, CCBL deputy commissioner and umpire-in-chief, and Nick Zibelli, president of the CBUAO.

ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) – Getting ready to enter his second season as head coach of the UCF baseball program, Terry Rooney was pleased to announce his first recruiting class on Monday. The class features 21 players with 10 bringing in experience from the junior college ranks and six who were previously selected in the MLB Draft. It also is made up of 18 student-athletes from the Sunshine State and eight who call the Central Florida area home.

Former LSU coach “Smoke” Laval named Head Coach at UNF in 2011

SmokeLaval JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – University of North Florida Director of Athletics Lee Moon announced today that Raymond “Smoke” Laval will take over as the new head baseball coach for the Ospreys. Laval will replace current head baseball coach Dusty Rhodes, who announced his retirement today, effective at the end of the 2010 season.

“We’re excited to have Raymond joining the UNF family,” said UNF President John A. Delaney.  “He brings a wealth of experience to the plate and we look forward to him picking up where Dusty left off, continuing to build upon a strong baseball program here at the University.”

Coppin State, Tennessee Tech Release 2010 Schedules

NCAA_Tenn_Tech_Clemson_Baseball_02.standalone.prod_affiliate.74 The Coppin State Eagles have released their 2010 baseball schedule.  The Eagles will begin the season with a seven game road trip with stops at Longwood (Feb. 19-20), George Washington (Feb. 26-27), and Navy (March 3).  They will then return home for seventeen straight home contests including weekend series against Iona (March 6-7), Lehigh (March 12-13), Maryland Eastern Shore (March 27-28), and Niagara (March 30-31).
