Richmond adds Joey Haug to coaching staff

JoeyHaug UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – University of Richmond head baseball coach Mark McQueen has named Joey Haug to the position of volunteer assistant coach. Haug comes to the Spiders following a standout playing career at Coastal Carolina University.

McQueen also announced that Joe Frostick, who previously served as the volunteer assistant coach for four seasons, will assume the role of baseball operations volunteer.

Michigan State adds seven to 2010 Class

JakeBoss EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State baseball coach Jake Boss Jr. announced the addition of seven student-athletes who have signed National Letters of Intent and will report to campus this fall. The summer signees include: Dane Frazier (Mattawan, Mich.), Bryce Jenney (Northville, Mich.), John Martinez (Auburn Hills, Mich.), Chad Nielsen (Ann Arbor, Mich.), Trey Popp (Kalamazoo, Mich.), Chase Rihtarchik (Rochester Hills, Mich.) and Joe Zwierzynski (Crystal Lake, Ill.). The freshman class for the fall of 2009 will number 14 student-athletes, as the seven who recently signed join the previously-announced seven that committed in November 2008.

Head to the Minors or College?

JackMcGeary I know we are technically a college baseball blog but these two articles are about some players that decided to skip college to head to the minor leagues. Both of them have had good results but reaching them in much different ways.

The first article focuses on number 2 pick in the 2007 MLB Draft Mike Moustakas who is currently on pace to make the Kansas City Royals in a few years. He was selected ahead of some current MLB players in Matt Wieters and Rick Porcello just to name two of them.

Cal State Fullerton Unveils 2010 Schedule

FullertonSchedulePic Fullerton, Calif. – The Cal State Fullerton baseball program unveiled their 2010 schedule Thursday morning, setting the field for the Titans’ 36th Div. I season.

• The Titans will welcome home former Head Coach George Horton, as he makes his return to Goodwin Field as the skipper of the Oregon Ducks. The Titans and Ducks will open the 2010 season on Feb. 19.

• The 56-games schedule will include 25 games versus Big West opponents, 11 games apiece against Pac-10 and West Coast Conference teams, eight games against clubs from the Mountain West Conference and a lone game with Conference USA.

Marty Lees named Associate Head Coach at Oregon State

MartyLees CORVALLIS, Ore. – Marty Lees has been promoted to the position of associate head coach with the Oregon State baseball team, Beavers’ head coach Pat Casey announced on Thursday.

"It’s an honor and privilege to be here at Oregon State and I am excited about this promotion," Lees said. "Over the past nine years, it has been a great opportunity and I’ve been fortunate to work with other great coaches. I want to thank Coach Casey and Bob De Carolis for this opportunity. Oregon State and the Corvallis community have been great to me."

Seton Hall Incoming Freshman David Bachner Passes Away

large_bachner I came across this story from Seton Hall Media Relations on incoming freshman David Bachner who was found dead at his home in Plainsboro on August 11th. According to a report from The Star-Ledger, Bachner was diagnosed with a heart condition in June as a doctor was giving him a physical for Seton Hall. He ended up wearing a heart monitor for a couple of games. He was expected to become an instant contributor to the Pirates rotation as Seton Hall gave him a full scholarship for next season. He finished his high school career with a 17-3 record with a 1.50 ERA and 236 strikeouts. You can check out a Star-Ledger report on him by clicking here. Dartmouth Baseball adds Jonathan Anderson to staff

JAndersonDuke HANOVER, N.H. — Dartmouth College head baseball coach Bob Whalen announced the hiring of Jonathan Anderson as an assistant coach for the Big Green this year. He will work with the outfielders and help with the hitters and recruiting in his first year at Dartmouth.

Anderson joins the staff having spent the past two years coaching at his alma mater, Duke University, where he served as the first base coach. Not only did he coach the outfielders and oversee bunting, he also helped out with the hitters and base runners. Anderson was the director of the Duke Baseball Academy camps and managed the recruiting data base, plus assisted with academic development, compliance and travel.

Chuck Ristano joins Temple Coaching Staff

RistanoMonmouth PHILADELPHIA – Chuck Ristano, who helped lead Monmouth to a pair of NEC Championships and NCAA Tournament appearances in his four seasons, has been named an assistant baseball coach at Temple, head coach Rob Valli announced today. Ristano will serve as pitching coach and recruiting coordinator for the Owls.

"Coach Ristano has clearly distinguished himself as one of the best recruiting coordinators in our region," Valli said. "His pitching staffs have always produced tremendous results. We expect that formula for success to continue here at Temple."

Huskers complete 2010 Recruiting Class

_hub6424_375_large Lincoln (www.Huskers.com) – University of Nebraska Head Coach Mike Anderson announced Wednesday that seven student-athletes have joined the Husker baseball program for the upcoming season.

Tuesday’s group includes four pitchers and three catchers, and features three players from Nebraska in addition to student-athletes from Minnesota, Missouri, Texas and California.

“We are excited about completing this year’s recruiting class,” Anderson said. “This group of players, combined with the players we announced earlier this year, brings a lot of potential for not only this season, but for the future as well.”

Zach Brown joins The Citadel Coaching Staff

ZachBrown Charleston, S.C. – The Citadel Baseball team will welcome back former Bulldog Zach Brown as a volunteer assistant coach. Brown, a 2007 graduate, returns to The Citadel after a two and half year stint in the minor leagues with the San Diego Padres organization.

“We are excited for his return in our volunteer coaching position,” said Head Coach Fred Jordan. “Zach will be a great asset in all areas, especially with defensive work at first base.”

Jon Mikrut joins Northwestern Coaching Staff

JonMikrut EVANSTON, Ill. – Jon Mikrut, who played at Northwestern from 2002-05, has returned to his alma mater as an assistant coach for the Wildcat baseball team head coach Paul Stevens announced Wednesday.

"We’re very excited to have Jon back at Northwestern University after being a player here and moving on to professional baseball," Stevens said. "We feel that he will have a strong relationship with our student-athletes. He’ll be in charge of infielders and hitters and I think that they will be well instructed and well prepared under his guidance."
