Orleans edges Chatham 4-3 to advance in CCBL Playoffs

MichaelOlt ORLEANS, Mass.- The opening round of the 2009 Cape Cod League Baseball Playoffs came to a close with the Chatham Anglers taking on the Orleans Firebirds at Eldredge Park in Orleans. On a serene night that quickly became animated, the Firebirds moved on to the second round with a 4-3 victory over the Anglers.    

The high stakes were clear early in the first inning, when Orleans right fielder Jeremy Gould (Duke) squared around for a suicide squeeze with centerfielder Gary Brown on third. Gould was unable to get the bunt down, but was able to do one better, singling Brown in later in the at-bat.

Cotuit cruises by Wareham 5-2 to advance in CCBL Playoffs

160px-CotuitKettleersLogo COTUIT, Mass.—Cotuit struck early in the one-game elimination round against Wareham to cruise to a 5-2 victory over the Gatemen Friday afternoon. Cotuit will move on to face either Bourne or Y-D tomorrow in the second round of the playoffs. The Kettleers had quality pitching from their starterJustin Grimm (Georgia) and reliever Ben Rowen (Virginia Tech) to keep them ahead of the Gatemen, with the hitters stepping up with some big hits early in the game.

Texas Longhorns recruit Colton Cain signs with Pirates

ColtonCain Baseball America writer Jim Callis reports that the Pittsburgh Pirates and Colton Cain have agreed on a 1.125 million dollar contract bypassing his collegiate eligibility. Cain was expected to become a key contributor to the Longhorns program as he features a mid-90’s fastball and also had potential into developing into a top level first baseman. Cain’s stock dropped as he told many MLB clubs that he was set on attending college but with this substantial offer for the eighth round pick he had to sign a professional deal.

Live Video: Cape Cod Baseball League Playoffs

CCBL The Cape Cod Baseball League will be providing live video of the CCBL playoffs which start up today at 3pm when the Wareham Gatemen play the Cotuit Kettleers at 3pm while Chatham plays Orleans at 7pm.  Wareham and Cotuit have not announced their starting pitchers for the game yet while Chatham will send Baylor’s RHP Logan Verrett (2-0, 3.09 ERA) as Orleans counters with Rutgers LHP Casey Gaynor (2-1, 1.74 ERA).

Texas Collegiate League Recap 08-06-09

Bryan-College Station, TX (August 7, 2009) –

The first pitch thrown by Travis Smith at Driller Park in Kilgore, Texas last night set a Bombers franchise record. The start by Smith was his tenth of the season, breaking a record set by 2008 Bomber, Jim McGonigle. When Smith struck out Mike Petello to lead off the sixth inning, he tied the Bombers franchise record of strike outs in a single season at 51 with Casey Whitmer. The strike out for Smith also set the record for innings pitched in a single season set the night before by Drew Flaniken. However, Smith’s bid for his first Bomber win came up short, as the Bombers fell 8-6.

Area Code Baseball Games- Day Two Recap

LONG BEACH, Calif.– On Day 2 at the 2009 Area Code games, there was yet another tie game, but the Milwaukee Brewers Gray team finally came through with the event’s first victory in Game 4. Defensive plays in the outfield highlighted Thursday’s action, as did the bats of the Washington Nationals’ Drew Vettleson.

Victoria Advocate talks with Texas State’s Ty Harrington

Tyharrington The Victoria (TX) Advocate has an excellent feature on Texas State head coach Ty Harrington who just completed his tenth season with the school. He has been influential in getting the program on the national stage as they had an excellent 2009 season which saw them go 41-17. It was good enough to get them the number 2 seed in the Austin TX regional before going 0-2 with tough losses to Boston College and Army.

Temple Adds Three To Recruiting Class

Rob Valli PHILADELPHIA – Temple head baseball coach Rob Valli has added three players to his recruiting class–shortstop Adrian Perez (Woodland, CA / Woodland / Yuba CC), righthander pitcher Brian Sustersic (Orlando, FL / Dr. Phillips / Daytona State CC) and outfielder Bobby McCormick (Oakton, VA / Oakton). The trio will arrive on campus later this month to help the Owls pursue an Atlantic 10 Championship in 2010.

Dan Burton added to Maryland Coaching Staff

DanBurtonAP COLLEGE PARK, Md. – University of Maryland baseball coach Erik Bakich announced today the hiring of Dan Burton as assistant coach, filling the need for a recruiting coordinator on Bakich’s first coaching staff at Maryland.

Burton comes to Maryland after spending one season as a volunteer assistant at Austin Peay, where he coached the outfielders, served as assistant hitting instructor, and ran the strength and conditioning program.

Both he and Dans teammate Mikie Mahtook were late-comers after winning this year’s College World Series.

2009 Area Code Baseball Games-Day 1 Recap
