Checking in on LSU signees

PaulMainieri The Daily Advertiser has an excellent article looking at the job Paul Mainieri is trying to do at keeping his top recruits on path to head to Baton Rouge over the minor leagues. The top two prospects that he needs to worry about are Zack Von Rosenberg of Zachary High and Brody Colvin of St. Thomas More High. Von Rosenberg was selected by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the sixth round while the Phillies selected Colvin in the seventh round by the Phillies. Both of them are not expected to sign for “slot” money so both organizations need to step up their offers considerably. LSU has also revoked the letters of intent to two junior college players in Slade Heathcott and Brett Bruening. Heathcott is expected to sign with the New York Yankees in the next week as he was selected in the first round while Bruening did not fulfill academic commitments that he promised to Mainieri.

Bourne walks off in a 3-2 victory over Orleans

FROM CBB NEWS SOURCE

BourneBraves BOURNE, Mass.—Jorge Reyes (Oregon State) pitched an absolute gem against the Bourne Braves on Saturday night at Doran Park. The Firebirds got to White Sox draft pick and Braves’ ace Bryan Morgado (Tennessee) for a run in the third inning after putting together a pair of hits. In the eighth, Orleans would tack on another run off of Logan Billbrough (William & Mary) to make it 2-0 Orleans.

All the while, Reyes was in a groove that resembled Danny Almonte pitching to players three years his junior in the Little League World Series. Recently named league MVP Kyle Roller (East Carolina) singled in the first and catcher Chris Wallace (Houston) reached on an error in the third. From then on, Reyes retired 19 consecutive Braves.

Cotuit pitching dominates in 3-0 victory over Yarmouth-Dennis

FROM CBB NEWS SOURCE

160px-CotuitKettleersLogo YARMOUTH, Mass. – The Cotuit Kettleers knew they had their work cut out for them taking on the heavily favored Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox who have dominated all season long and they didn’t let intimidation get the best of them as they shut-out the Red Sox 3-0 in Saturday’s outing. Fantastic pitching and defense from Cotuit, combined with a productive ninth inning offensively, proved that Cotuit has what it takes to be competitive with the best team in the league.

Chad Bell (Walter State JC), who started the day with a 1.77 ERA and 3-1 record, was on the mound for the Kettleers and had an incredible 8 shut-out inning performance. Bell’s success can also be attributed to the stellar defense of his infield, who managed to execute four double plays during the game. Bell allowed just 6 hits and 3 walks with no runs over the eight innings.
