The big news of the day, it will come down to one game tomorrow, winner take all. The Reds and the Athletics both look to lay claim to a mythical Area Code Championship.

Washington Nationals 11, New York Yankees 1

Day five of the 2009 Area Code Games saw four games and it kicked off with the Yankees and the Nationals. For the Nationals it was their last game of the week and it was a good week for the kids from the Northwest.

It was easy to see that two players garnered most of the attention, in Josh Sale and Drew Vettleson, but there were other players who stood out through the week. But let’s saw this about those two players. Vettleson’s home may be in the outfield and Sale, it will stir debate, may be the top hitter in the country. He has power and a good swing. Everything the pair hit this week was hard, including the outs.

Oakland Athletics 8, Texas Rangers 5

It was another win for the Athletics, who kept the machine rolling. They moved to 3-0-1 on the week and will gear up for the Reds on Monday morning. The A’s have been the other hot team in the tournament. They have pitched well, had timely hitting and kept their mistakes to a minimum.

It started with a leadoff walk in the second inning by Bobby Geren, who later scored and made it a 1-0 game.

The A’s then broke it open in the third inning when they pushed four runs across on three hits. The big hit in the inning was a double by Ty Linton, who has been a terror at the plate. On the day he went two for three with a walk.

Milwaukee Brewers Blue 5, Chicago White Sox 2

The White Sox were looking for their first win of the week and in order to get it they would have to top the Milwaukee Brewers Blue. The White Sox all week have just been plain snake bit. They have played well and pitched well, but just got a couple of unlucky bounces here and there, and entered the game with a 0-1-2 record.

Jason Adam got the start for the Sox and he went the first two innings. He pitched solidly, just giving up one hit and striking out four. His counterpart, Gabriel Encinas, went the first two innings as well giving up just one hit.

In the Brewers half of the third, they struck for two runs. Jake Hernandez blasted a RBI triple off of Sox reliever Jordan Shipers. Hernandez then scored on a RBI groundout by Anthony Wolters, the Brewers starting shortstop.

Cincinnati Reds 1, Milwaukee Brewers Gray 0

The last game of the day featured two teams from the West. The Reds entered the game with a 2-0-1 record and the Brewers Gray entered with a 2-2 record. The Gray team came off a Jekyl and Hyde day yesterday when they got hammered by the Nationals, but came up big against the White Sox. The Reds on the other hand have been one of the best teams of the week.

There were goose eggs on the board for both teams until the bottom of the eighth.

With one out in the eighth Marcus Littlewood hit a double and scored Taylor Lindsey, who a pinch ran for Jaycob Brugman. It was Brugman who reached on a drop 3rd srike with one out. That play would loom large. FULL STORY
