Mike Cole added to Maine Coaching Staff

MikeCole ORONO, Maine – University of Maine baseball coach Steve Trimper announced today that Mike Cole has been named an assistant coach of the Black Bears. Cole comes to Maine after spending the past season as an assistant baseball coach and recruiting coordinator at the University of Vermont.

"Mike is a wonderful addition to our staff," said Trimper. "It’s great to be reunited with him once again. Known as a tireless recruiter and teacher, he will be a tremendous asset to our infielders and hitters."

Cole served as assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at the University of Vermont from July 2008 to May 2009. In addition to serving as the recruiting coordinator, he also was the hitting coach and coordinated travel. He also assisted with scheduling. In 2009, the Catamounts set team single season records for hits, runs, doubles and home runs. The team had four first team All America East Conference selections and the 2009 America East Player of the Year.

Prior to Vermont, Cole served as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Manhattan College from August 2004 to June 2008. With the Jaspers, he served as the hitting coach, planned travel, assisted in position player skill instruction and strength and conditioning along with fundraising. The 2006 team set a school record with 34 wins and won the first ever MAAC Championship. The team qualified for the NCAA Regionals and earned a spot in the Regional Championship game against the University of Miami. The team had four first team All-MAAC selections, the MAAC Player of the Year, eight MAAC All-Academic selections and a major league draft pick. The 2007 team went on to win 35 games and advanced to the MAAC Championship game. The team finished with two Louisville Slugger Freshman All-Americans and three major league draft picks. In 2008, Baseball America ranked Manhattan’s recruiting class as second in the Northeast.

Cole began his coaching career as an assistant coach at the University of Vermont from September 2001 to June 2004. He helped with skill instruction with the infielders and hitters, assisted in recruiting and practice planning, along with supervising academic study halls. In 2003, the team won a school-record 32 games, a school-record 17 conference games and the first ever America East regular season title.

Cole also served as an assistant coach with the Manchester Silkworms of the New England Collegiate Baseball League in the summer of 2003.

Cole was a four-year starter for the University of Vermont from 1997-2001. He served as team captain and was named most valuable player his senior season. Upon graduation, he was Vermont’s all-time leader in games played, doubles, RBI and ranked second in career hits. He was an All-America East selection at third base his senior season.

Cole replaces Jared Holowaty, who was recently named head coach at Whitman College in Walla Walla, Washington.
