DanBurtonAP COLLEGE PARK, Md. – University of Maryland baseball coach Erik Bakich announced today the hiring of Dan Burton as assistant coach, filling the need for a recruiting coordinator on Bakich’s first coaching staff at Maryland.

Burton comes to Maryland after spending one season as a volunteer assistant at Austin Peay, where he coached the outfielders, served as assistant hitting instructor, and ran the strength and conditioning program.

"Dan Burton is one of the top up-and-coming young coaches in college baseball," said Bakich. "He is a tireless worker and his relentless energy will produce immediate results on the recruiting trail and towards our goal of winning an ACC Championship. I am extremely excited to have Dan on our coaching staff and look forward to his development in becoming one of the nation’s best recruiters."

After a successful playing career at the University of Louisville, Burton began his coaching career as a student assistant with the Cardinals in 2008. That year, he helped guide Louisville to a NCAA Regional berth and a 41-21 record.

In his four-year playing career, Burton was a first baseman and outfielder, and was an integral part of the team that advanced to the 2007 College World Series his senior season. In Omaha, Burton went 4-for-13, including a three-run home run in a win over Mississippi State. He helped the team set a number of school records including most wins (47), first NCAA Tournament win, first Regional Championship, first Super Regional Championship and first College World Series appearance.

Burton finished his career with a .287 batting average, posting 231 hits and 141 RBI. He finished ranked fourth all-time in games played (225), fifth in career at-bats (806), and seventh in doubles (48). As a senior, he posted career bests in batting average (.309), home runs (8), RBI (57), and stolen bases (21).
