Live Video: Team USA vs The Bahamas

The USA National Team continues their play in the 2009 Enbridge Northern Gateway World Baseball Challenge. Team USA opened up play on Sunday with a 5-2 victory over the Canadian National Team. (FULL STORY). They followed that up with a surprise loss to the German National Team by a score of 6-3. (FULL STORY). The team from The Bahamas has struggled in this tournament as they have lost to Prince George Axemen by a score of 13-3 (Box Score), Germany 20-3 (Box Score), and got no-hit by the Canadian National Team in a 14-0 defeat. NCAA issues Moratorium for Composite Bats

BatRolling4 The NCAA has announced that they are placing a moratorium for composite bats according to a report from Baseball America’s Aaron Fitt (LINK). The issue about the composite bats aroused during the Tennessee and Vanderbilt season ending series where multiple homers by the Volunteers were hit over the wall at ridiculous distances. Tim Corbin was adamant that Tennessee was using hot bats to hit those homers including getting a bat confiscated. The SEC Tournament Conference Call which took place after that series focused on the issue.

Western Major Baseball League Recap for July 21st

Western Major Baseball LeagueThe Okotoks Dawgs won five of six over the past week, running their record to 27-11. They now lead the West Division by 6.5 games. They also continue to draw good crowds; 2,063 for a 5-3 win over the Medicine Hat Mavericks (Jake Bottari [College of Idaho] got the win) and 2,352 for an 11-10 win over the Lethbridge Bulls. Jeff Duda (Campbellsville) got a 7-0 shutout at the Edmonton Prospects, and leads the team in W-L (6-1), ERA (2.29). He leads the league in strikeouts (80), and has issued only nine walks in 70 2/3 innings pitched. Duda pitched the first eight innings of a 12-inning 3-2 win at Medicine Hat; Mac Sullivan (USC) hit a home run to win it, and Lee Ingram (Thompson Rivers) got the win. Manny Kumar (Grambling State) singled in the winning run in a 12-inning 3-2 win at Lethbridge. Anthony Cros (Northwest Oklahoma State) continues to lead the Dawgs in hitting, with an average of .398. KC Royals honor Dick Howser

DickHowserPICRoyals Legendary FSU player/coach and Kansas City Royals manager Dick Howser was honored by the Royals in a ceremony on Friday evening before the game against the Tampa Bay Rays. The Royals gave out bobbleheads to the first 20,000 fans while letting one of his twin daughters in Jana Howser throw out the first pitch. The NCBWA honors Howser by naming their Player of the Year Award after him which was won by Stephen Strasburg this season.

Dayton Releases 2010 Schedule

DaytonBaseball DAYTON, Ohio – The defending Atlantic 10 regular season champion Dayton Flyers have released their 2010 baseball schedule, which includes matchups against a pair of ACC opponents, as well as a number of games against regional rivals.

"Our 2010 Schedule is highlighted with quality teams that will allow us to prepare for our Atlantic 10 schedule," said head coach Tony Vittorio. "We are excited and looking forward to the competition."

The schedule includes games against Horizon League tournament winners Wright State and Bowling Green, who captured the 2009 regular season MAC title.

Canada gets no-hitter at World Baseball Challenge

KevinAtkinson Jordan Rawlyk (transferring from Monterey Peninsula JC to Sonoma State), Brandon Kaye (transferring from Douglas College to British Columbia) and Matt Bannister (British Columbia) combined for a no-hitter in a mercy-rule-shortened 14-0 win over The Bahamas.

Rawlyk went five innings, struck out seven, walked three. Kaye, who was drafted in the 45th round by the Blue Jays, pitched the sixth inning, and threw only five pitches. Bannister pitched the seventh inning.

Vanderbilt’s Derek Johnson Promoted

NASHVILLE, Tenn. —Vanderbilt baseball coach Tim Corbin announced today that he is promoting Derek Johnson to Associate Head Coach.

Johnson has spent the last eight seasons as the Commodores pitching coach and is regarded as one of the top teachers in collegiate baseball.

“DJ’s is very deserving of the title of Associate Head Coach in so many ways,” said Corbin. “Not only is he in a very small class of great pitching coaches in the country, he serves as an ambassador and role model to the kids and our baseball program here at Vanderbilt.”

Last season the Commodore pitching staff sported a 4.66 earned run average, fourth best in the Southeastern Conference. Vanderbilt finished among the top five in the conference in nine statistical categories, and led the league in shutouts (six) and complete games (six). Junior Mike Minor was drafted by the Atlanta Braves with the seventh overall pick in the draft, marking the fourth Vanderbilt hurler to be selected in the first round during Johnson’s tenure.

Kent State’s Tyler Martin Injured

T.Martin Kent State’s Tyler Martin suffered a severe eye injury on Saturday afternoon as he was playing with the Stark County Terriers after a freak accident. Martin was walking near the on-deck circle where an errant bat struck him near one of his eyes. He was rushed immediately to a nearby hospital which put him under surgery to repair the damage. He is currently still in the hospital and I have not received any word if the incident will affect his vision. Read the rest of this entry »

Team USA loses to Germany 6-3

BradMiller (PRINCE GEORGE, British Columbia) – Team USA pitchers surrendered three home runs and German pitcher Tim Henkenjohann pitched 8.2 innings as Team Germany beat the U.S., 6-3, at the 2009 Enbridge Northern Pipeline World Baseball Challenge at Prince George Citizen Field.

USA starter T.J. Walz (Kansas) surrendered a solo home run to Jendrick Speer and a two-run shot to Simon Guerhing in the bottom of the fourth inning as Germany (2-1) went up 3-0 on the U.S.

Team USA opened up the tournament with a 5-2 victory over the host Canada on Sunday evening while Germany destroyed the Bahamas 20-3.
