Team USA wins World Baseball Challenge

SOF-070109-1223.jpg PRINCE GEORGE, British Columbia — USA starter Drew Pomeranz (Ole Miss) took a no-hitter into the seventh inning and Team USA beat Germany, 8-1, in the championship game at the 2009 Enbridge Northern Gateway Pipeline World Baseball Challenge at Prince George Citizen Field.

Germany got on the board in the first inning on no hits. Pomeranz (Ole Miss) put two runners on board with a hit batsman and a walk before a sacrifice bunt moved them to second and third. Ludwig Glaser followed with an RBI groundout to second base for the 1-0 lead.

Live Video: Team USA vs Germany in World Baseball Challenge Final

Team USA will play their final game of the summer today in the 2009 Enbridge Northern Gateway World Baseball Challenge in Prince George British Columbia. Team USA will take on the Germany National Team which picked up an upset victory over the United States team during the preliminary rounds (Full Recap). Team USA will send LHP Drew Pomeranz (Ole Miss) to the hill to face TBD pitcher from the German team. The game is set to begin at 7pm Eastern/4pm Pacific. UWM’s Scott Doffek Signs Contract Extension

ScottDoffek MILWAUKEE – University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Athletic Director George Koonce has announced that head baseball coach Scott Doffek has signed a new three-year contract.

Doffek just concluded his third season as the head coach of the Panthers. He was named the seventh head baseball coach in school history on Sept. 25, 2006.

"I am pleased that we have been able to agree with Scott Doffek on a new three-year contract," Koonce said. "Scott has given many great years of service to our department and university, and has led our baseball program to tremendous success. We look forward to having Scott with us for many years to come."

Texas Collegiate League recap 07-25-09

Bryan-College Station, TX (July 25, 2009) –

Set to the tune of a James Bond-themed Gold Finger Night, Brazos Valley Bank Ballpark went gold tonight as the Bombers took on the East Texas Pump Jacks. 300 lucky fans came home with Golden Foam Fingers as the Pump Jacks came away with a 12-4 victory in the first game of the two game set.

Santa Clara’s Joe Supple tosses no-hitter

JoeSupple The official website for the Santa Clara Broncos recently sat down with junior to be RHP Joe Supple who recently tossed a no-hitter in the Cal-Ripken League. He is playing this summer for the Rockville Express as he leads the team with a 2.84 ERA.

Washington set to hire Meggs

Meggs According to Kendall Rogers of Rivals.com (FULL REPORT), Washington is set to hire Indiana State head coach Lindsay Meggs. He has been the head coach of the Sycamores for the past three seasons. He had his best season in 2009 while going 33-21 overall and 15-7 in Missouri Valley Conference play. Before heading to Terre Haute, he spent the previous 13 seasons with Division 2 power California-State Chico where he won two national championships while compiling a 538-228-4 record.

The Brazos Valley Bombers provided some early fireworks tonight, as they rallied from behind to defeat the McKinney Marshals by a score of 6-4. The Bombers, who improved to 17-17 on the season, will host the East Texas Pump Jacks tomorrow on Goldfinger Night.

Maryland Hires Pepperdine’s Sean Kenny as Pitching Coach

 

Eric Bakich announced today that he hired former Pepperdine pitching coach Sean Kenny. This is an interesting move as Kenny has been on the west coast as members of coaching staffs since the 1997 season with stints at Saint Mary’s, San Diego, and most recently at Pepperdine for the past eleven seasons. He played college ball at Eastern Michigan but a move to the highly competitive ACC and across the country is interesting as he has to continue to have his connections on the East Coast for recruiting. CBB Visit: Bend Elks at Bellingham Bells

PeterLavin Another West Coast League game, and extra innings. CF Lucas Hileman (Baylor) came home on a wild pitch by Mitch Ludtke (Skagit Valley CC) to provide the winning run in the top of the 13th.

Both teams got excellent efforts from their starters, although they were long gone before it was over. Bend’s Peter Lavin (San Francisco) allowed eight hits over eight innings, and Bellingham’s Tyrell Poggemeyer (Skagit Valley CC, transferring to Lewis-Clark State) allowed five hits over seven innings. After giving up runs in the first two innings on RBI single by RF Cal Towey (Baylor)  and 2B Colin Stock (Saint Mary’s) coming in on a double steal, Poggemeyer retired 17 of the next 18 batters he faced.

Cal-State Fullerton SS Christian Colon Injured

ChristianColon Cal-State Fullerton and current member of the United States Collegiate National Team was injured in the eighth inning on Friday night when Canadian Nic Lendvoy slid hard into second base to break up a double play. Both benches ended up clearing on the play but order was quickly restored. Colon was carried off the field as his current condition is unknown. This could be an injury which could affect Colon during Fall Ball but he has about six months to get ready for the regular season.

Team USA edges Canada 1-0 to advance to Championship Game

GerrittCole (PRINCE GEORGE, British Columbia) – Andy Wilkins hit an RBI triple in second inning and Gerrit Cole (UCLA) pitched a complete game two-hitter as Team USA beat Canada, 1-0, at the 2009 Enbridge Northern Gateway Pipeline World Baseball Challenge at Prince George Citizen Field.

Yasmani Grandal (Miami) hit a single to right field with two outs and Wilkins followed with an RBI triple off of the scoreboard in left center to put the U.S. (18-5; 5-1) up 1-0 in the bottom of the second inning.

Live Video: Team USA vs Canada

Team USA enters the playoff round tonight of the 2009 Enbridge Northern Gateway World Baseball Challenge tonight against Team Canada. The USA National team defeated Canada earlier in the tournament by a score of 5-2. Team USA is expected to send ace pitcher Gerritt Cole to the mound tonight while the Canadian pitcher is Jordan Rawlyk from Monterey Peninsula JC. The game is set to start at 10 PM Eastern/7 PM Pacific. You can check out Live Video from the game below.
