Sierra Baseball League Report

Stockton Glory Katie Dowd who contributes to The College Baseball blog on occasion recently checked out a game in the Sierra Baseball League. Wait, you have never heard of the Sierra Baseball League? It was founded in 2007 by Stevie Mac and the commissioner of the league is Phil Swimley who won over 900 games as a collegiate coach. The game that Katie attended featured the Stockton Glory taking on the hometown San Jose Seals at Evans Diamond which serves as the home of the Cal Bears.

2009 Area Code Game Rosters

AreaCode1 One of the most prestigious high school baseball tournaments is set to take place August 5th-10th at Long Beach State’s Blair Field. Western Illinois coach Stan Hyman to undergo treatment for Leukemia

Hyman Western Illinois head coach Stan Hyman was recently diagnosed with Leukemia and started treatments today. He will undergo Chemotherapy treatment for the next 30 days at Methodist Medical Center in Peoria Ill. Assistant coach Brock Bainter will be handling all baseball duties until Hyman is well enough to return. The College Baseball Blog would like to wish Hyman and his family best wishes for a full recovery.

Strasburg negotiations going slow

stephen-strasburg-draft Thomas Boswell of The Washington Post has a lengthy article about Stephen Strasburg and his negotiations with the Washington Nationals. Boswell caught up with Strasburg after the 2009 Golden Spikes Award ceremony which took place at the 2009 MLB All-Star game. Strasburg states that there has been very little contact with the team besides them offering him a minor league contract so Strasburg couldn’t become a free agent if he is not able to come to terms by the deadline in August.

Spencer Allen set to be named Assistant Coach at Washington State

Washington State Baseball Spencer Allen is set to take over the recruiting coordinator position at Washington State which was left open after former assistant coach Travis Jewett was named to the same position with Arizona State. Allen has spent the last two seasons at Purdue after having coaching stops at Iowa, Creighton, and Edmunds Community College.

Western Illinois head coach Stan Hyman's signing of Jason Smith gives the Leatherneck's a total of 11 new players for the 2010 season.

Western Illinois signs 11 for 2010

MACOMB, Ill. – Righthanded pitcher Jason Smith of Morrison, Ill. has signed his National Letter of Intent to play baseball at Western Illinois for the 2010 season.

The signing of Smith gives head coach Stan Hyman a total of 11 new players for his 2010 team. The 2010 recruiting class includes players from California, Washington, Illinois, Missouri, Wisconsin and Ohio.

Jason Murray Joins Liberty Baseball Staff

JasonMurrayLiberty Lynchburg, Va. – Liberty Head Baseball Coach Jim Toman has announced the hiring of Jason Murray as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator. 

Murray replaces former Liberty coach Nick Schnabel, who accepted a similar position at East Carolina earlier this month.  Murray will serve as the team’s infield coach and assist with the hitters.

“We are delighted that we were able to hire someone with Jason’s experience,” said Toman.  “Not only has Jason worked with several outstanding coaches, but he has also been a head coach in the Big South Conference and was recently the recruiting coordinator at Michigan.  As a strong Christian, Jason is a perfect fit for Liberty, and we are extremely excited to have him and his wife, Mindy, join the Liberty family.”

Arizona State names Jewett as Assistant Coach and Recruiting Coordinator

TravisJewett TEMPE, Ariz. – Arizona State University head baseball coach Pat Murphy has hired Travis Jewett as assistant coach and recruiting coordinator for Sun Devil baseball, the baseball program announced today. Jewett comes to Arizona State from Washington State, where he spent the past five seasons as associate head coach and recruiting coordinator.

No stranger to Pac-10 baseball, Jewett has coached in the Pac-10 for the past eight seasons. He spent the previous five years at Washington State, helping lead the Cougars to an NCAA Tournament berth this past season, their first since 1990.

Tyler Lyons, Chatham LHP

TylerLyons The first half of this week’s Coca Cola Co-Pitchers of the Week has been awarded to Chatham starter Tyler Lyons (Oklahoma State). The 6-2 southpaw earned the accolade this week by shutting out Wareham on August 19th, securing a 1-0 victory for his Anglers. Lyons surrendered only two hits in a complete game performance, fanning 11 Gatemen without walking a batter. Lyons now has two wins and two losses on the season, sporting a healthy 2.20 ERA.
