Bakich seeking an ACC title with Maryland

BakichMaryland Patrick Stevens of The Washington Times has put out an excellent article about newly hired Maryland baseball coach Erik Bakich who is seeking to turn around the Terps baseball program. The Maryland program has been a near laughing stock over the past four decades with their last NCAA tourney berth in the 1971 season. Bakich is considered a wizard on the recruiting trail as he turned around the Vanderbilt program during his seven years there from being a doormat into being one of the best teams in the nation. Current Vanderbilt head coach Tim Corbin says the following about Bakich’s recruiting ability “"He’s just got a different way about him. He’s a good-looking kid. He’s a chameleon. He can talk to you, can talk to a banker, can talk to a bum on the street and make them all feel good."

I personally think that Bakich can turn around the Terrapins program with is recruiting ability and is considered one of the best young coaches in the country. Will it happen in one year? Absolutely not, but I would not be surprised to see them being in contention for an NCAA bid by the 2012 season. I hope to have a chance to speak to Bakich after fall workouts to get his feelings on his first head coaching job and to preview the 2010 team.
