Washington settling on a New Head Coach??

UPDATE AT 3:45 PM on July 17th
hughesAccording to multiple sources, Virginia Tech’s Peter Hughes was offered the Washington Huskies job today but turned down the offer to stay with the Hokie program. Hughes just finished his third season with the Virginia Tech program where he went 32-21 in 2009. It was good enough for a 11th place finish in the ACC.

This was an interesting news story because Hughes has really done nothing with the Virginia Tech program and according to my sources received a raise after he was offered the Washington job. The leading candidates for the Washington job continue to be Mike Trapasso from Hawaii, Nino Giarratano from San Francisco, and Billy Jones from Oklahoma State.

UPDATE #1 at 1:20am- Baseball America’s Aaron Fitt is reporting that San Diego’s Rich Hill flew up to Seattle on Wednesday evening to discuss the job with Washington. The blog post is available by clicking here.

UPDATE #2 at 3:00am– Kendall Rogers is of Rivals is now stating that Hill has flown to Washington to meet with the Washington Athletic Department. My sources are refuting the interest that Rich Hill has in the job. It is likely a move Hill is doing to try to raise his salary at San Diego which is similar to what Hughes did with Virginia Tech.

UPDATE #3 at 1:00am- According to my sources, Billy Jones is not in the running anymore.

UPDATE # 4 at 3:45pm- As I said earlier, Rich Hill would not accept the Washington job which turned out to be true according to a report by Baseball America’s Aaron Fitt today. He now states that Washington is focusing in on Kansas head coach Ritch Price. (Check out Aaron’s report by clicking here.) The interesting part here is that Ritch’s youngest son Robby Price will be entering his senior season in the fall and would Ritch turn down the opportunity to coach his youngest son for one more season?

Pretty embarrassing so far for Washington. The job is not desirable at all.

Do you have a ballpark figure for Hill’s current salary and what Knutson was earning? In an earlier post you mentioned that Hawaii typically doesn’t pay well. The current head coach salary is $135K.

As I stated, Hill has no interest in the job. Hill’s salary is not public since the school is private. He received a multi-year extension in the fall of 2007 and is an EXCELLENT head coach.
