ST. PETERSBURG, FL – Following an inaugural event in which nearly 17,000 spectators attended games in a three-day period, the second Big Ten/BIG EAST Baseball Challenge, hosted by the St. Petersburg/Clearwater Sports Commission, has been confirmed for the weekend of Feb. 26-28, 2010. The 2010 edition, to be held in St. Petersburg and Clearwater, FL, will feature 10 teams from each conference competing in 30 games and be managed by API Sports. Read the rest of this entry »

CWS Journal with Brian Foley (Day 3)
The third day of the blog’s trip to Omaha Nebraska for the College World Series started off with the site rolling out of bed at 9 am local time. I made the big trek down to the continental breakfast which was your hotel meal. After that we caught up on some local and national sports news before heading over to Rosenblatt. Once we got over to the ballpark we stopped by Zestos which is world renowed for their cheeseburgers and great milkshakes. CWS Game 4: Texas 6 Southern Miss 5
The Texas Longhorns and Southern Miss Golden Eagles faced off in the nightcap on Sunday evening. Texas entered the game with a 46-14-1 record while Southern Miss entered with a 40-24 mark. The Longhorns sent Sophomore RHP Cole Green to the hill with his 5-3 record in 18 appearances (17 starts) while compiling an ERA of 3.02. Southern Miss started Todd McInnis who won the 2009 C-USA Pitcher of the Year award. He is 9-4 with a 3.61 ERA in 18 appearances (17 starts). Read the rest of this entry »
CWS Game 3: ASU 5 UNC 2
The Arizona State Sun Devils took on the North Carolina Tar Heels in the opening game of the second day of action at the College World Series. Arizona State enters the game with a 49-12 record while North Carolina has a 47-16 record. ASU sent LHP and Australian native Josh Spence to the hill as he sported a 9-1 record with a 2.33 ERA. Spence was selected in the third round (110 overall) by the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. UNC countered with RHP Alex White who was 8-4 record and a 4.13 ERA. Wake Forest set to hire UNO’s Walter
Kendall Rogers of Rivals.com/Yahoo Sports is reporting that Wake Forest has agreed to terms with New Orleans head coach Tom Walter. He has spent the last five seasons with the Privateers accumulating a less then stellar 153-147 record at the school. This record is deceptive as UNO had to face the Hurricane Katrina disaster which took the members of the squad’s minds off the field for the entire season. This past season saw UNO only go 22-33 which is less then impressive but made back to back regionals in the 2007 and 2008 seasons. Read the rest of this entry »

CWS Journal with Brian Foley (Day 2)
The College Baseball Blog started out Day 2 of our trip to the College World Series with a nice continental breakfast at the hotel before making the trip over to Rosenblatt Stadium. Once we got to the stadium, we headed up to see some of the sites of the area with all the crazy college baseball fans around the country. CWS Game 2: LSU 9 Virginia 5
The LSU Tigers took on the Virginia Cavaliers in the second game of the College World Series. The Tigers entered the game with a 51-16 record while Virginia has a 48-13-1 record. Virginia sent freshman LHP Danny Hultzen to the mound as he sports a 9-1 record with a 2.09 ERA while LSU countered with Sophomore RHP Anthony Ranaudo is 10-3 with a 2.95 ERA. CWS Game 1: Arkansas 10 Cal-State Fullerton 6
The opening game of the College World Series featured the Arkansas Razorbacks taking on the Cal-State Fullerton Titans. Arkansas entered the game with a 39-22 record while the Titans of Cal-State Fullerton had a 47-14 record. Arkansas started junior lefty Dallas Keuchel who had a 7-3 record with a 4.04 ERA in 16 starts. Cal-State Fullerton countered with freshman Noe Ramirez who is 9-1 with a 2.86 ERA in 19 appearances including 14 starts. Read the rest of this entry »
Ackley, Leake, Strasburg Named Finalists For 2009 Dick Howser Trophy

OMAHA, Neb. – North Carolina first baseman Dustin Ackley, Arizona State pitcher Mike Leake and San Diego State pitcher Stephen Strasburg have been named as finalists for the 2009 Dick Howser Trophy in balloting by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association and in conjunction with the College Baseball Foundation, the Dick Howser Trophy committee and the St Petersburg Area Chamber of Commerce.
The winner of the Howser Trophy will be announced in Lubbock, Texas, on July 2, during the inaugural College Baseball Awards Show, held at the United Spirit Arena and shown on MLB.com. The nationally broadcasted event will be followed by the College Baseball Hall of Fame induction ceremony on July 3 in Lubbock.
