Golden Spikes is better than the Heisman?

GoldenSpikesThe Wall Street Journal has an interesting article about the success rate of players who win the Golden Spikes Award being more successful than players that win the Heisman Trophy Award. I think the reason behind this is that the best players in College Football do not fit the “system” at the next level being the NFL. In baseball, it is much different in that the best player in college is likely going to be able to hit/pitch in the MLB because the talent transfers over easier to the pro game. CWS Championship Series Preview: LSU vs Texas

cws_logo1After all the dust settled on the 2009 College Baseball season, we only have two teams standing with the LSU Tigers taking on the Texas Longhorns in the College World Series Championship Series. The LSU Tigers enter with a record of 54-16 while being on a 13 game postseason winning streak dating back to the SEC Tourney. Texas enters with a 49-14-1 record while being 8-1 in NCAA Tourney play with the only loss coming to TCU in the Super Regionals. Read the rest of this entry »

National Team Trials: Blue Team Blanks Red Team, 2-0

usa-baseball-logo(CARY, N.C.) – Christian Colon (Cal State Fullerton) hit an RBI single in the bottom of the fifth inning as the Blue Team defeated the Red Team 2-0 in a seven inning intrasquad game on Sunday at the USA Baseball National Team (Collegiate) Trials.

With runners on the corners and two outs in the bottom of the fifth inning, Christian Colon (Cal State Fullerton) hit an RBI single to right field that easily scored Casey McGrew (Wright State) from third base. 2009 National Team Trials: Blue Team Scores 4-2 Victory Over Red Team

usatraditionallogo(CARY, N.C.) – Preston Tucker (Florida) hit a solo home run in the sixth inning as the Blue Team defeated the Red Team 4-2 in a seven inning intrasquad game on Saturday at the USA Baseball National Team (Collegiate) Trials.

Tony Zych (Louisville) and Tyler Holt (Florida State) hit back-to-back doubles for the Blue Team in the third inning. Rick Hague (Rice) then placed a single to left-center field that scored both Zych and Holt and put the Blue Team in front 2-0 early. Read the rest of this entry »

Orleans defeated Brewster 8-2 with the key hit being a Matt Koch (Loyola Marymount) pinch hit sixth inning grand slam. Box Score

Lowe’s Senior Class Award Winner and Senior All-American Teams Announced

(Omaha, NE) – University of Florida infielder Brandon McArthur, a student-athlete who helped his team to the NCAA Super Regional after overcoming a serious injury his freshman year, has been selected as the winner of the 2009 Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award in the baseball division.

The award, chosen by a nationwide vote of coaches, media and fans, is presented annually to college baseball’s outstanding NCAA Division I senior student-athlete. The announcement and trophy presentation were made today by Lowe’s, an Official Corporate Partner of the NCAA, during the 2009 NCAA Men’s College World Series in Omaha, Neb. CWS Game 12: Texas 4 Arizona State 3

ColeGreenOMAHA, Neb. – Catcher Cameron Rupp and center fielder Connor Rowe hit solo home runs in the bottom of the ninth to give Texas a 4-3, walk-off win over Arizona State before a crowd of 23,257 Friday night at Rosenblatt Stadium.

The Longhorns, making their 32nd College World Series appearance in school history, improve to 8-1 in the NCAA Tournament and 49-14-1 on the season. CWS Game 11 Recap: LSU 14 Arkansas 5

OMAHA, Neb. – LSU used eight extra-base hits and six scoreless innings from right-hander Anthony Ranaudo to post a 14-5 victory over Arkansas before a crowd of 19,734 Friday afternoon at Rosenblatt Stadium.

The Tigers, making their 15th College World Series appearance in school history, improve to 8-0 in the NCAA Tournament and 54-16 on the season with their 13th consecutive win. CCBL Recap for June 19th

ccblOnly two games took place in the Cape Cod Baseball League on June 19th as rain affected the majority of games.

The Wareham Gatemen picked up a 6-3 win over the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox on Friday night. The star for the Gatemen was Duke’s Jake Lemmerman who went 1-4 with the only hit being a three RBI double in the sixth inning. Full Story

The other game of the night saw Cotuit win a wild one over Brewster by a score of 10-9. The big star on the night for Cotuit was Kentucky’s Chris Bisson who went 3-5 with three runs scored and drove in two runs. Box Score

Team USA Trials: Red Team 5 Blue Team 2

usa-baseball-logo(CARY, N.C.) – Casey McGrew (Wright State) drove a double down the left field line and Gerrit Cole (UCLA) stuck out eight as the Blue Team defeated the Red Team, 5-2, at the USA Baseball National Team (Collegiate) Trials, Friday, at the National Training Complex in Cary, N.C.

For the first three innings of the intrasquad game, the pitching ruled. Starting pitchers Cody Martin (Gonzaga) of the Red Team and Gerrit Cole of the Blue Team held their respective opponents off the board for the first three as they combined for only one hit. Read the rest of this entry »
