SEATTLE – After 17 seasons as the University of Washington’s head baseball coach, Ken Knutson will no longer serve in that position effective June 30.
Knutson, only the second head coach of the Husky baseball program since 1977, has spent almost all of the last 27 years as a player, assistant coach and head coach at Washington.
“I have spent nearly my entire professional life at the UW,” said Knutson. “I am looking forward to spending more time with my family and having the opportunity to place my professional focus on growing my private business.
“I’m proud of everything the UW baseball program has accomplished during my years here. I have met some really awesome people and coached so many great players over the years. That’s what I’ll miss the most, for sure.”
A 1981 graduate of Washington, Knutson compiled a 584-399-2 overall record as the Huskies’ head coach and went 240-189 against Pac-10 opponents. He has the most wins in school history and was named Pac-10 North Division Coach of the Year three times during his tenure. He led Washington to two Pac-10 titles, four division championships and six appearances in the NCAA Tournament.
Since taking over for Bob MacDonald in 1993, he coached 55 first-team all-Pac-10 performers and had 76 players selected in the Major League Baseball Draft. Of the 15 Huskies who have played in the majors, seven played at the UW under Knutson – including 2008 National League Cy Young Award winner Tim Lincecum.
