usa-baseball-logo(CARY, N.C.) – Christian Colon (Cal State Fullerton) hit an RBI single in the bottom of the fifth inning as the Blue Team defeated the Red Team 2-0 in a seven inning intrasquad game on Sunday at the USA Baseball National Team (Collegiate) Trials.

With runners on the corners and two outs in the bottom of the fifth inning, Christian Colon (Cal State Fullerton) hit an RBI single to right field that easily scored Casey McGrew (Wright State) from third base. Tyler Holt (Florida State) nearly scored from first base on the play but Colon was thrown out at second before he crossed the plate.

The Red Team tried to answer in the top of the sixth inning when Michael Choice (UT Arlington) led off with a double to the right centerfield warning track. Yasmani Grandal (Miami) landed on base after being hit by a pitch to put two runners on with one out. But the Blue Team secured its one run lead as Tony Thompson (Kansas) popped out to second and Preston Tucker (Florida) grounded out to Ross Wilson (Alabama) to end the inning and the threat.

The Blue Team plated another run in the bottom of the sixth as Rob Segedin (Tulane) scored from second as Preston Tucker (Florida) dropped a throw from the shortstop. The unearned run put the Blue Team up 2-0.

Both starting pitchers threw four strong scoreless innings for its respective team. Trevor Bauer (UCLA) surrendered only one hit in the third inning and struck out five batters while Bryce Brentz (Middle Tennessee State) gave up two hits and fanned three.

Nick Pepitone (Tulane) picked up the win for the Blue Team. Logan Verrett (Baylor) picked up the save.
