2009 National Team Trials: Blue Team Scores 4-2 Victory Over Red Team

usatraditionallogo(CARY, N.C.) – Preston Tucker (Florida) hit a solo home run in the sixth inning as the Blue Team defeated the Red Team 4-2 in a seven inning intrasquad game on Saturday at the USA Baseball National Team (Collegiate) Trials.

Tony Zych (Louisville) and Tyler Holt (Florida State) hit back-to-back doubles for the Blue Team in the third inning. Rick Hague (Rice) then placed a single to left-center field that scored both Zych and Holt and put the Blue Team in front 2-0 early.

After holding a 2-1 lead heading into the sixth inning, Tucker drove a ball out of the park, adding an insurance run for the Blue Team. Tucker’s first home run of the National Team Trials proved to be the winning run of the game.

The Blue Team added another run in the top of the seventh to cap its scoring after Holt began the inning with his second double of the evening. Hague laid down a sacrifice bunt to put Holt on third with one out, and Bryce Brentz (Middle Tennessee State) sent a sacrifice fly to right field for its fourth and final run of the game.

The Red Team scored one run in the bottom of the third inning and again in the seventh. Christian Colon led the Red Team as he went 2-4, scoring the Red Team’s first run and notching the RBI in the seventh.

Mike McGee (Florida State) (0-1) took the loss for the Red Team as he allowed two runs on four hits through four innings pitched. Alex Wimmers (Ohio State) and Casey Harman (Clemson) both pitched three innings, tallying three strikeouts each. Wimmers allowed one run on two hits for the Blue Team, and Harman surrendered two runs on four hits while starting for the Red Team.

National Team Trials will continue Sunday, June 21 at 4:00 PM (ET) with a Blue vs. Red intrasquad game at the USA Baseball National Training Complex in Cary, N.C. Batting practice and pregame workouts will begin at 2:00 PM.
