Fullerton Regional- Day 3 Recap

Recapping the action from the Fullerton Regional at Goodwin Field on Sunday.

Utah- 9, Gonzaga- 7

Led by a 5-for-5 performance by freshman Tyler Yagi, the Utah baseball team defeated Gonzaga in an elimination game of the NCAA Regional on Sunday afternoon, 9-7.

With the win, Utah turns around to play Cal State Fullerton in the regional title game tonight beginning at 6:10 p.m. (PT, 7:10 MT). The Utes would have to beat the Titans twice to win the regional.

Yagi, who tied his career-high for hits, led a Utes offense that has scored 20 runs and banged out 33 hits in their two elimination games since an opening night loss to Cal State Fullerton on Friday.

Leadoff hitter Corey Shimada finished 3-for-4 with a pair of runs and an RBI while three-hole hitter Nick Kuroczko was 2-for-5 with three RBI. C.J. Cron and Rick Cornu also finished with multiple hits on the day.

Cal St. Fullerton- 16, Utah- 3

Cal State Fullerton’s Khris Davis finished with three hits, including a pair of home runs, and Head Coach Dave Serrano earned his 200th career coaching victory as the Titans punched their ticket to the Super Regional round with a 16-3 victory over Utah on Sunday night in front of 2,185 fans at Goodwin Field.

Fullerton improved to 45-14 overall on the season, extending its winning streak to seven straight games and advancing to its 10th NCAA Super Regional in school history. The Titans will meet either Louisville or Vanderbilt beginning next weekend.

Utah finished its season at 28-31 overall.

Freshman right-hander Tyler Pill (11-3) earned the win on the mound, pitching eight strong innings while allowing just three runs (two earned) on seven hits and striking out nine without a walk. Stephen Streich (2-4) took the loss, allowing eight earned on 10 hits in four innings of work.

Three other Fullerton players finished with three hits on the night to pace a 21-hit attack for the Titans, who had seven batters finish with multiple hits. Cal State Fullerton averaged 13.6 runs and 20 hits for the three games, batting .476 (60-for-126) as a team in regional play.
