The Lone Star Showdown this weekend between Texas and Texas A&M will heavily impact the Big 12 conference race.  Texas currently leads Kansas State and rival Texas A&M by one game in the conference standings.  The two teams will be playing a split series, with the Friday game in College Station and the two remaining games in Austin.  Oklahoma and Oklahoma State face off in the Bedlam Series, with Friday’s game to be played at Driller’s Stadium in Tulsa and the other two games at AT&T Bricktown Ballpark in Oklahoma City.  Read the rest of this entry »

WAC Weekend Preview (May 7th – May 10th)

NM State Pitcher D.J. Simon

NM State Pitcher D.J. Simon

Week six in the WAC sees four teams within a half game of each other and all seven WAC teams still with a mathematical shot at the regular season title. Louisiana Tech enters week six as the undisputed hottest team in the league after a stunning sweep over Hawai’i in Honolulu. After starting the league race at 1-7 the Bulldogs have won eight of their last 10 with sweeps over three time defending league champion Fresno State and conference tournament favorite Hawai’i (as the Tournament is being held in Honolulu). Much to the relief of the other six WAC teams, it’s Louisiana Tech’s turn to step out of conference this weekend as the remaining six battle to sort out the mess that is the 2009 WAC race.

SERIES OF THE WEEK
San Jose State (32-16, 8-6) at New Mexico State (38-10, 9-7)

SEC Weekend Preview (May 8th-10th)

I am pinch-hitting this week for Colin Weber as he had another commitment. The top series of the weekend sees Florida making their first trip to the new Alex Box Stadium to take on the LSU Tigers. The other marquee series is Arkansas visiting Alabama. The Vanderbilt Commodores have an important series at Georgia as they will give freshman Sonny Gray his first career start on Friday night. We also see Mississippi State visiting Ole Miss in an intrastate rivalry series. The other two series sees Auburn going to Kentucky and South Carolina heading to Tennessee. Pac-10 Weekend Preview (May 8th-10th)

We get a bit of a break this weekend from Pac-10 play as four teams have a bye in the conference schedule that they will fill with non-conference opponents. There are only three Pac-10 series on the slate this weekend, but each includes one of the three teams battling it out for second place in the conference (with an outside shot at first place). Those three teams, UCLA, Washington St. and Oregon St., play teams they should take the series from, but if one can come up with a sweep they could get some breathing room for that coveted second place spot.
