Big East Players of the Week

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Junior lefthanded pitcher Justin Marks of Louisville was named the BIG EAST Player of the Week after his commanding performance in the first of three games against USF. Freshman second baseman T.J. Jones of Cincinnati was named the BIG EAST Player of the Week after scoring the winning run in the last game of the season to punch the Bearcat’s ticket to the BIG EAST Championship in Clearwater, Fla. Texas Earns 2009 Big 12 Baseball Regular Season Title

IRVING, Texas — Texas has won its fifth Big 12 regular season championship, the conference office announced. The defending postseason champion will be the top seed at the 2009 Phillips 66 Big 12 Baseball Championship scheduled for May 20-24 at AT&T Bricktown Ballpark in Oklahoma City. It marks the 11th time the championship has been played at this venue.
Using Numbers instead of Signs?
The San Francisco Chronicle has a good article about a growing trend in College and High School baseball. Everyone that has seen a few different college teams have seen how some college teams communicate with calling pitches with a number system and teams have now tried to bring that over to the offensive side of the game.
I personally think this is a fine idea as it is easier for the players to recognize the numbering system but it does slow the game down. What do you think? Read the rest of this entry »
Dustin Ackley second best player in draft?
Peter Gammons of ESPN wrote an interesting article recently about UNC’s Dustin Ackley being the second best player in the 2009 MLB Draft. He has shown throughout his collegiate career to be one of the most potent bats but the question is whether or not he is the second best player in the country after Strasburg? What do you say? Texas State is the Top Seed in Southland Baseball Tournament

FRISCO, Texas – No. 25 Texas State will be the top seed in the 2009 Southland Conference Baseball Tournament when it begins Wednesday at Whataburger Field in Corpus Christi, Texas. The Bobcats claimed their third regular-season championship and their first outright title last weekend after finishing the regular season with a 38-14 overall record and 24-7 mark in conference play.

CBB Visit: UNC at Boston College (May 16th)
The biggest story in New England a couple of years ago was the emergence of Matt Harvey down in Connecticut as he was one of the top high school players in the country. After being drafted by the Los Angelos Angels of Anaheim in the third round but failing to agree to a contract with the Angels, it was decided that he would head to North Carolina to continue his development. The 2009 season has been up and down for Matt as he entered the game with a 5-2 record but an ERA of 6.70. Read the rest of this entry »

Army wins Patriot League Title and NCAA bid

D3 Regionals: Fahey’s gusty performance not enough to save Engineers
MANSFIELD Conn. – Senior Conor Fahey’s decision to miss graduation almost paid off for WPI.

Two days after throwing 140 pitches against Suffolk in the opening game of the New England Regional of the NCAA Division III tournament, the righthander hurled 163 gutsy pitches over eight and a third innings in a elimination game against top seeded Eastern Connecticut, on a day when his classmates received their diplomas.
