D3 Regionals: Trinity holds off Eastern to advance to World Series

MANSFIELD Conn. – Bases loaded. Two outs.

Trinity’s Jeremiah Bayer, the New England Pitcher of the Year, stared in at the plate. Looking back was Eastern senior Shawn Gilblair, the New England hitter of the year, up in the top of the ninth with his team trailing by one.

But in a matchup of the best players of the two top teams in the Division 3 New England regional, it was Bayer who won out, getting Gilblair to loft a short popup to shortstop to end the game and send the Bantams to the World Series in Grand Chute Wis. where they will look to defend their 2008 title. 2009 Ivy League Season Awards

PRINCETON, N.J. — It has been since the late 1980s that Dartmouth hoisted a championship in Baseball. In 1987, the Big Green, led by star pitcher Mike Remlinger, brought the old EIBL championship to the friendly confines of Hanover, N.H. Since then, six other Ivy League teams have won the title as the Big Green waited for another shot at glory. That all changed in 2009 as Bob Whalen’s squad emerged to take the Ivy League Baseball Championship in the rubber match of a three-game series with Bill Walkenbach’s Cornell squad, all the while ending the 22-year drought. Green catcher had his best week and weekend of the season hitting safely in all four games as the Falcons took two of three games from Akron to win the league title after having played Oakland mid-week. After helping lead UAB to a series victory over No. 4 Rice, the highest-ranked team that the Blazers have ever won a series against, junior DH Digger Towe has been named the Conference USA Hitter of the Week. Conference USA preparing for tournament

After winning the 2009 Conference USA regular season title, East Carolina will be the No.1 seed at the 2009 C-USA Baseball Championship, which begins Wednesday at Pete Taylor Park in Hattiesburg, Miss. The Pirates secured the crown after finishing off a three-game sweep of Memphis, while UAB rallied to defeat Rice on Saturday. For East Carolina (41-15), it is its second Conference USA regular season championship, as the Pirates won the 2004 title with a league-record 25 conference victories. Read the rest of this entry »
