West Virginia 20 Pittsburgh 8 (7 innings)

CLEARWATER, FLA. – Senior Austin Markel’s three-run home run in the seventh inning helped West Virginia defeat Pitt in seven innings, 20-8, on Thursday afternoon at the BIG EAST Championships at Bright House Field in Clearwater, Fla. The 10-run rule was enforced following the seventh inning.

Markel went 4 for 5 with two triples and a BIG EAST Championship record six RBI, breaking Louisville’s Justin McClanahan’s single-game record of five RBIs against Villanova in 2008. The All-BIG EAST Third Team member’s two triples gives him 17 for his career, passing former Mountaineer great Tyler Kuhn on the school’s all-time list.

The only other player to record two triples in a single game in conference tournament history was Rutgers’ Paul Galucci on May 14, 1997.

Louisville 12 Notre Dame 2 (Resumption of May 20th game)

CLEARWATER, Fla. – The 17th-ranked Louisville baseball team got five scoreless innings of relief on the mound from sophomore righty Tyler Mathis and the offense added three more runs in a 12-2 victory over Notre Dame on Thursday morning at Bright House Field in the completion of Wednesday’s suspended second round game at the BIG EAST Championship.

With the win, top-seeded Louisville (42-14) improved to 2-0 in the 2009 BIG EAST Championship and advanced to the semifinal round, currently scheduled for 10 a.m. ET on Friday, where they will face the winner of Thursday night’s St. John’s-Notre Dame elimination game.

Mathis, a redshirt sophomore from Covington, Tenn., allowed only two hits with six strikeouts in his five innings of work to earn his first win since 2007 and improve to 1-3 overall this season. As a freshman, Mathis was 3-0 with a 3.60 ERA before an elbow injury cut the season short and forced him to miss the entire 2008 season. Wednesday’s performance was his best since returning from the injury, while the 5.0 innings matched a season-long.
