IRVING, Texas—Buck Afenir (Kansas) and Sean Yost (Nebraska) have been tabbed the Phillips 66 Big 12 Player and Pitcher of the Week, for games of May 11-17 in voting by a panel of media covering the conference. Both student-athletes receive the accolade for the first time in their careers.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Buck Afenir, Kansas, C, Sr., 6-1, 205, Escondido, Calif./Escondido

Afenir anchored KU’s offense in the Jayhawks’ series victory over No. 11 Kansas State this weekend. He batted .545 with a pair of homers and six RBI, going 6-for-11 at the plate. The senior backstop recorded a career-high four hits in Saturday’s 9-3 triumph over the Wildcats, including a two-run homer to break the game open. On Sunday, Afenir went 2-for-3 with another two-run round-tripper and a sacrifice fly as the Jayhawks defeated K-State, 17-7 in seven innings. The Escondido, Calif. native was also a force behind the plate in the series. K-State entered the weekend leading the conference in stolen bases, but had just one steal against Afenir.

PITCHER OF THE WEEK

Sean Yost, Nebraska, RHP, Fr.-RS, 6-6, 194, Lincoln, Neb./Southwest

Yost tossed a six-hit shutout against Baylor on Saturday for his first-ever Big 12 victory. He did not allow more than one base runner after the first inning while establishing a career high with six strikeouts. Yost’s victory also accounted for Nebraska’s first shutout of the season and first complete-game shutout since March of 2008. The Lincoln, Neb. hurler became the first Husker freshman to pitch a nine-inning shutout since the 2000 season. It was the longest appearance for Yost in 2009.
