GREENSBORO, N.C. – Miami outfielder Chris Herrmann has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Baseball Player of the Week and North Carolina pitcher Matt Harvey has been named ACC Pitcher of the Week for their performances in the final games of the regular season.
Herrmann led the Hurricanes offensively in their series sweep at Wake Forest, going 10-for-13 (.769) with team-highs in RBI (8), runs (8), walks (4), total bases (17), on-base percentage (.824) and slugging percentage (1.308).
In Thursday’s series-opening win, Herrmann became the first Hurricane to score five runs in a game since Jim Burt accomplished the feat on June 6, 2004 against FAU. The junior from Tomball, Texas, then recorded his second two-homer game in a span of 15 days in UM’s Miami’s win in the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader.
Herrmann finished with at least three hits in all three games over the weekend, recording three in each of the first two games before going a perfect 4-for-4 in the series finale. He reached base in 14 of his 18 plate appearances against the Demon Deacons, adding four walks to his 10 hits.
Harvey, a sophomore from Mytic, Conn., tossed a career-best 8.2 innings to lead North Carolina past Boston College Saturday for a win that helped lock up the ACC’s Coastal Division for the Tar Heels.
Harvey turned in his finest performance of the season in his return to New England, carrying a shutout into the ninth inning. He struck out eight and scattered seven hits with four walks. Harvey, who struck out the side in the fourth, faced just three over the minimum through five innings. He ran into trouble in the sixth when the Eagles loaded the bases on two singles and a walk, but Harvey buckled down to force a ground ball to preserve the shutout until a pair of pinch-hit doubles led to Boston College’s lone run in the ninth.
The victory improved Harvey to 6-2 in his sophomore season.
Both Miami and North Carolina will be among the eight-team field for the 2009 ACC Baseball Championship, which gets under way Wednesday in Durham, N.C.
