Southland Conference Players of the Week

FROM CBB NEWS SOURCE
southlandpowFRISCO, Texas – UTSA second baseman Ryan Hutson has been named the hitter of the week while a Sam Houston State duo – Sean Weatherford and Gillaume Duguay – have been named the Southland Co-Pitchers of the Week, the league office announced Monday.

Hutson was a one-man wrecking crew in leading UTSA to its third consecutive sweep of McNeese State. The sophomore from Round Rock, Texas (Round Rock H.S.), hit a robust .638 (9-for-13) with six runs and 10 runs batted in. He also homered in all three contests, including two on Friday night, and he took over the team lead with his 14th of the spring on Sunday, an inside-the-park two-run shot in the second inning. Huston has left the park nine times in the last 11 contests. Hutson opened the weekend with a 3-for-5, season-high five-RBI performance and followed that up by going a perfect 4-for-4 with a walk, double, three runs and three RBI in Saturday’s 20-6 victory. He finished the weekend with two hits on Sunday.

Weatherford and Duguay combined to strike out 22 batters in Sam Houston State’s 7-2 victory over Central Arkansas Friday night, setting both school and conference records for strikeouts in one game. The former Southland record for strikeouts in a game was 20 by Louisiana-Monroe vs. Louisiana Tech in 1999. Weatherford, a freshman from Bryan, Texas (Bryan H.S.), pitched five innings in the start and struck out 12 batters before handing the game over to Duguay, a senior from Trois-Rivieres, Quebec, who fanned 10 in his four-inning save.

Honorable mention for hitter of the week goes to Northwestern State first baseman Justin O’Neal, Lamar left fielder Tyler Link, Texas State catcher Ben Theriot and Southeastern Louisiana catcher Josh Cryer. Honorable mention for pitcher of the week goes to Lamar right hander Ricky Testa, Texas State right hander Tyler Brundridge, Central Arkansas right hander Reece Cross and Southeastern Louisiana right hander Ryan Collins. To receive honorable mention, a player must receive votes from 25 percent of the Southland baseball sports information contacts.

Each school’s SID nominates and votes for the players of the week, though is not permitted to vote for his or her own player.
