Texas State 7 Nicholls State 6

SAN MARCOS – The Texas State Bobcats clawed their way back after an early offensive attack from the Nicholls Colonels and scored two run in the bottom of the ninth to take a 7-6 victory Sunday afternoon at Bobcat Field and claim the 2009 Southland Conference Regular Season Championship.

This marks the first outright championship the Bobcat baseball team has won. Texas State claimed the Texas Division title in both 1996 and 1997. With the win, Texas State improves to 37-12 overall and 23-6 in league action and will enter the postseason tournament on May 20 in Corpus Christi, Texas as the No. 1 overall seed. Nicholls falls to 18-31 on the season and 8-22 in the conference.

In the bottom of the ninth, Ross Larson was brought in to close out the game with a 6-5 Colonel lead in tow. Tyler Sibley belted his pitch straight back Larson that was too hard to handle to put the tying run on base. Bret Atwood laid down a sacrifice bunt to shift him to second base and with one out Paul Goldschmidt knocked a double down the left line to plate Sibley and Spenser Dennis brought Goldschmidt home in the next at-bat, lacing a double to the opposite field.

Northwestern State 7 Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 6

CORPUS CHRSITI – Northwestern State picked up its second consecutive, three-game Southland Conference sweep on Saturday when the Demons held on to defeat Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 7-6.

And while doing so, NSU closer Chad Sheppard earned his 10th save of the season as he tied the school’s single-season record set by Daniel Desclouds in 2005.

The win pushed the Demons over the .500 mark for the first time in a month as they improve to 24-23 overall. They bettered their conference record to 16-12 after winning their sixth straight league game. Corpus fell to 17-36 overall and 8-22 in the league.

“Overall, I’m happy with the way we played today,” said head coach J.P. Davis. “We played hard in all areas of the game. We got a lot of hits, but we also left a few guys on base. But we got the job done when we needed to.”

Southeastern Louisiana 12 Stephen F. Austin 5

HAMMOND – Facing a 4-0 deficit after two and a half innings, the Southeastern Louisiana University baseball team (34-18, 20-10 Southland Conference) did what it does best as the Lions came from behind to claim a win for the 23rd time this season and the second time in as many days. This time, a six-run bottom of the third jump started the Lion lineup en route to a 12-5 win in the rubber match of a three-game set with Stephen F. Austin (22-27, 13-16 SLC) on Sunday in Southeastern’s home finale at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field.

The Lions sent seven seniors out as winners in their final game at Alumni Field as Chris Cappo, Ryan Collins, Jordan D’Arensbourg, Brian McCants, Robert Rugg, Brandon Street and Ty Summerlin celebrated Senior Day at the expense of the Lumberjacks.

McCants, a left handed pitcher/outfielder from Slidell, got the start on the mound. Unfortunately, the Lumberjacks jumped out to an eraly lead with a pair of runs in the second and two more in the top of the third to take a 4-0 lead.

UTSA 13 McNeese State 11

LAKE CHARLES, La. — For third third consecutive day, UTSA found itself in an early hole at McNeese State, but just as they did the previous two days, the Roadrunners rallied in the middle innings en route to a 13-11 victory on Sunday.

UTSA (29-21, 18-12 SLC) posted its 16th come-from-behind win of the season after rapping out 13 hits and taking advantage of eight walks by a quartet of Cowboys pitchers. The Birds, who recorded their third Southland Conference sweep of the season (all on the road), swept McNeese State for the third year in a row.

The Cowboys (20-29, 9-21 SLC) jumped out to an early 5-0 lead when Ryan Brauninger laced a two-RBI double with one out in the first and Lee Orr hit a towering three-run home run, his team-leading 15th of the year, over the scoreboard in left three batters later.
