Texas State 10 Nicholls State 2

SAN MARCOS – Brian Borski gave a quality eight-inning performance on the mound and Tyler Sibley went 4-for-5 and scored two runs to aid the Texas State Bobcats in a 10-2 win over the Nicholls Colonels Saturday afternoon at Bobcat Field. The Bobcats improve to 36-12 overall and 22-6 in Southland Conference action, while the Colonels drop to 18-30 and 8-21, respectively.

Texas State punched out six hits for six runs in the bottom of the first to take the initial lead. Sibley and Bret Atwood hit back-to-back base hits and a wild pitch from Tyler Minto put the pair in scoring position. Paul Goldschmidt followed with a sacrifice fly to center field to plate Sibley, but Atwood was erased from the bases on a pickoff. With two outs and a clean diamond, Keith Prestridge drew a walk and Spenser Dennis singled to right field to push him to second. Ben Theriot backed the hit with a single through the right side and Kyle Livingstone mimicked the play to the opposite gap to send Dennis home. The two hitters followed him home in the next at-bat when Kyle Kubitza drove his first pitch over the centerfield wall for a three-run home run, his fifth long ball of the season.

Northwestern State 15 Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 2

CORPUS CHRISTI – Late Friday night, Northwestern State did little celebration after it learned it had clinched a spot in the Southland Conference postseason baseball tournament.

But on Saturday, the team rejoiced after Demon senior starting pitcher Jimmy Heard became the team’s most worked hurler in school history when he set a new career record in innings pitched after his seven-inning, 15-2 complete game win over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.

And with his four strikeouts, he tied NSU’s career mark, a record that should fall next Friday when the Demons host Southeastern Louisiana.

“When you speak of Jimmy Heard, there are three things you think of,” said Demon head coach J.P. Davis. “First, he’s a fourth year senior with experience. Second, he’s a competitor. And third, he’s got the stuff to make a great pitcher.”

Southeastern Louisiana 11 Stephen F. Austin 10

HAMMOND – It took a while, but the Southeastern Louisiana University baseball team (33-17, 19-10) rallied for the win for the 22nd time this season as a four run bottom of the eighth inning propelled the Lions to an 11-10 win in a three hour and 43 minute back-and-forth struggle with the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks on Saturday night at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field.

The Lions came from behind to win a ballgame for the 22nd time this season while also surpassing their 2008 win total of 32 and ensuring that Southeastern can receieve no lower than a No. 7 seed at the 2009 SLC Tournament. Texas-Arlington also fell to Lamar, giving the Lions sole posession of second place in the SLC once again.

Stephen F. Austin jumped out to an early lead with a pair of runs in the top of the first. The Lumberjacks added three more in the third to help chase Lion right handed sophomore starter Brandon Efferson after just 3.2 IP.

Lamar 3 UT Arlington 1

Lamar broke a 1-1 tie with a run in the seventh and another in the eighth, and Ricky Testa allowed one hit in three scoreless innings as Lamar defeated UT Arlington, 3-1, at Vincent-Beck Stadium Saturday to even the series at 1-1.

Lamar (33-19, 17-12 Southland) had 10 hits and got a solid outing from starter Matison Smith, who struck out six and allowed one unearned run while scattering three hits in a no decision.

Tyler Link went 3-for-3 and gave Lamar a 1-0 lead in the first when he led off with a double and scored on Quentin Luquette’s single two batters later. Jeremiah Sammy had two hits and drove in the third Cardinal run in the eighth.

UTSA 20 McNeese State 6

LAKE CHARLES, La. — UTSA wiped out a 5-0 deficit with 14 unanswered runs in the fifth and sixth innings and the Roadrunners went on to post season highs in runs and hits in addition to setting the program’s yearly record for home runs in a 20-6 victory at McNeese State on Saturday afternoon at Cowboy Diamond. The game was called after seven innings due to the Southland Conference’s 10-run rule.

The Birds (28-21, 17-12 SLC) posted their first 20-run SLC performance since a 24-11 victory against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on May 5, 2007, and the margin of victory was their greatest since handing McNeese a 16-2 setback on March 18 of that same year.

Trailing 5-0 entering the fifth, it looked as though UTSA was in trouble, as Cowboys starter Matt Click had retired 11 of the last dozen hitters he had faced after giving up a triple to freshman Jason Mohn to start the game.
