North Carolina once again holds the top overall national seed in this week’s edition of The College Baseball Blog’s NCAA Regional Projections.  The Tar Heels had last weekend off, but they still hold on to the top spot in the RPI according to Boyd’s World.  A conference series against in-state rival North Carolina State is next up for the Tar Heels.

UC Irvine, winners of nine of their last ten games, moves up to take over the second overall national seed followed by Rice, Texas, LSU, Arizona State, Georgia Tech, and Florida.

The Kansas State Wildcats, seeking their first NCAA tournament birth in school history, earn a regional host this week.  The Wildcats are only one game back of Big 12 leader Texas with two weekends of conference play remaining.

How can you put Virginia as a 2 seed in the Oxford region, when Virginia is ranked higher than Ole Miss?

The rankings have nothing to do with the regional projections.

The committee uses RPI, strength of schedule, home/away record, conference finish, record v. RPI top 50, record v. RPI top 100, and a few other things to evaluate teams.

Ole Miss, before their bad showing against Mississippi State last weekend, had more top 50 wins, more top 100 wins, were 2nd in the SEC, and were 11-5 on the road. I think Virginia will be in the hosting discussion, and could be a host site in this week’s projections, but the fact is 21 of their 37 wins are against teams outside the RPI top 100. They have a strong RPI and look to finish in the top 4 in the ACC, but their strength of schedule is really dragging down their resume. Outside of their ACC performance, there just isn’t much to their resume.
