PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Connecticut earned its first BIG EAST Player of the Week award of 2009 following freshman George Springer’s performance at Notre Dame over the weekend. Sophomore Randy Fontanez of USF was named the BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week following his complete game victory over Cincinnati.

Springer hit .520 (13-for-25) with a double, three home runs, 10 RBIs and 12 runs scored to lead the Huskies in a 5-1 week. He hit .545 (6-for-11) as Connecticut took two of three from Notre Dame and had at least two hits in all six games during the week. Springer hit his 14th home run of the season against the Fighting Irish on May 2, setting Connecticut’s freshman record.

Fontanez improved to 6-1 in BIG EAST games and lowered his ERA in conference play to a league-leading 2.06 with a complete-game win against Cincinnati in the first game of their three-game series. Fontanez scattered six hits and allowed two runs while striking out seven to register his 10th quality start of the season. He retired the last 13 hitters he faced.
