NAIA conference tournament recap for May 2

Southern States Athletic Conference – at Columbus, GA: #6 Southern Polytechnic took #8 Lee out of the tournament with a 6-3 win. Southern Polytechnic then lost to #4 Berry 9-3; Jason Dorcey pitched a complete game for the Vikings. The Hornets and Vikings will play one more game on Sunday for the championship.

Appalachian Athletic Conference – at Kingsport, TN: #10 Tennessee Wesleyan defeated Covenant 8-3. #14 Union defeated Virginia-Wise 14-4. Bluefield defeated King 5-4.

Mid-South Conference – at Campbellsville, KY: The tournament final between #8 Campbellsville and Georgetown College was rained out. They will try again at 1 PM EDT on Sunday. Georgetown College defeated Campbellsville 9-4 on Friday to force this “if necessary” game.

Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference – at Livonia, MI: #16 Madonna defeated Siena Heights 11-1, and Davenport 29-7. Indiana Tech defeated Concordia-Ann Arbor 11-2. Concordia and Madonna play each other on Sunday, and the winner plays Indiana Tech (undefeated in the tournament) for the championship.

Gulf Coast Athletic Conference – at Hattiesburg, MS: Belhaven upset #22 LSU-Shreveport 7-0. Craig Westcott pitched a complete game shutout for the Blazers, held the Pilots to four hits, struck out 14. Westcott is 11-3, 2.83 ERA, and 121 strikeouts (a school record) on the mound. At the plate, he’s hitting .361 with 11 home runs and a team-leading 62 RBI. Belhaven then defeated the Pilots again 9-2 to win the tournament; Lake Eiland hit a home run for the Blazers, and Kyle Hunt (7-2, 4.29 ERA), Joe Patterson, and Golden Grasse combined to hold the Pilots to two runs on seven hits.

Heart of America Athletic Conference – #20 Lindenwood defeated Benedictine 11-2. Avila defeated Culver-Stockton 13-3. The tournament continues May 4.

Dakota Athletic Conference – at Minot, ND: Jamestown defeated Dickinson State 15-2. Dickinson State defeated Dakota State 8-7 to stay alive in the tournament. Jamestown and Dickinson State will play for the championship tomorrow.

American Midwest Conference – at Lebanon, IL: Top-seeded McKendree was upset by Hannibal-LaGrange 4-3 in first round action. William Woods defeated Missouri Baptist 6-3.

I jumped the gun on the Gulf Coast Athletic Association conference. Belhaven hasn’t won it yet; they play U. of Mobile on Monday for the championship.
