ATHENS, Ga. – Jed Bradley scattered five runs over six innings and Jason Haniger went 4-for-5 with a home run to help No. 10 Georgia Tech (22-8-1) knock off top-ranked Georgia (29-7), 11-6, Tuesday night at Foley Field.

Bradley (2-2) tied a career-high with seven strikeouts to help the Yellow Jackets to their fifth win over a ranked opponent this season and their first against the nation’s top-ranked team since the 2003 season. The freshman lefty faced just one over the minimum from the third through fifth innings to earn his second win of the season. Read the rest of this entry »

MINNEAPOLIS – The D3baseball.com/National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Top 25 poll was released Tuesday and Salisbury University remains ranked at No. 2 for the second consecutive week. This is the fourth time this season that the Sea Gulls (29-4, 15-3 Capital Athletic Conference) have been ranked second by the media poll. SU received 10 first-place votes and 588 total points.

Top Six Southland Baseball Teams Separated by Just Three Games

Texas State is in first place in the Southland Conference and has a two-game lead ahead of Sam Houston State and UT Arlington with five weeks remaining in the regular season. Just three games separate the top six teams in the league and five games separate the top nine teams in the standings. The Bobcats (24-10, 13-5 Southland), which are riding a five-game win streak after sweeping Southeastern Louisiana last weekend between wins over Houston Baptist, are at Northwestern State this weekend. Sam Houston (20-13, 11-7) is at Nicholls State and UT Arlington (18-16, 11-7) visits Central Arkansas. Other league action this weekend pits Lamar at UTSA, Stephen F. Austin at McNeese State and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at Southeastern Louisiana.

Trust Fund and Bracelets for Jon Wilhite

wilhiteAs you may already know, former Cal-State Fullerton Titans catcher Jon Wilhite was critically injured in the crash that took the life of Angels pitcher Nick Adenhart, as well as Fullerton Student Courtney Stewart and Wilhite’s friend Henry Pearson of Manhattan Beach. Jon’s condition has improved enough to be moved to serious condition, and is still hospitalized at UCI Medical Center. The outpouring of support to the Wilhite family has been enormous. NCBWA names Pro-Line Athletic Players of the Week

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA)­ released the Pro-Line Athletic National Player of the Week awards for the period ending April 12, today. Oral Roberts senior shortstop Juan Martinez was named National Hitter of the Week, while Kent State junior right-handed pitcher Brad Stillings was named National Pitcher of the Week. One month into the conference season it is shaping up to be a very interesting race. Second-ranked Rice and No. 17 East Carolina are now tied for first place. Southern Miss and Houston follow behind in third and fourth, respectively. But, just two game separate the fourth and eight place teams, so much movement will likely occur over the next five weeks as teams jockey for seeding in the C-USA Championship in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, May 20-24. In the Bulls doubleheader versus Big Four rival Niagara University, Rob Lawler went a combine 4-for-6 with three RBIs and six runs. In the opening contest of the Bulls’ weekend conference series with Western Michigan, Lawler went 3-for-4 with an RBI. In the second game of the weekend series, the Bulls jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second with the Bulls getting on the board off an RBI-triple by Rob Lawler. Heading into the bottom of the fifth ahead 2-0, the Bulls began to build on their lead with a five-run effort. Lawler continued to add RBIs to his totals by poking a two-RBI double down the right-field line to extend the Bulls’ lead to 7-0. In the finale, Lawler finished by driling a two-RBI triple to give the Bulls an 8-3 lead in the contest. Read the rest of this entry »

North Dakota head coach Jeff Dodson is transitioning Fighting Sioux baseball from Division II to Division I.

North Dakota head coach Jeff Dodson was hired on June 20, 2008 to transition the University of North Dakota to Division I baseball after the school had spent the previous fifty years competing at the Division II level. Coach Dodson spent the previous five seasons as an assistant coach at Southeast Missouri State, where he was the pitching coach and recruiting coordinator.  The College Baseball Blog had the opportunity to talk with Coach Dodson and ask him about the specific challenges he faces as a first time head coach and with the transition process, the 2009 baseball team and staff, and the future of Fighting Sioux baseball.
