North Carolina 3 East Carolina 1

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – North Carolina right-hander Patrick Johnson carried a no-hitter into the seventh against hard-hitting East Carolina, and the No. 2 Tar Heels held off a late rally for a 3-1 win over the No. 14 Pirates Tuesday at Boshamer Stadium. With the victory, Carolina (25-7) extended its current winning streak to nine over ECU (25-6).

Johnson (2-0) was masterful against the Pirates, who entered the night eighth nationally with a .361 team average. Over a career-best 6 1/3 innings, the Conover, N.C., native struck out a career-high 11, walked three and allowed just the one base hit in the seventh. He retired six of the final seven batters he faced via the strikeout and fanned two or more in four separate frames.

South Carolina 7 Clemson 6

Columbia, S.C. – DeAngelo Mack’s two-run single in the bottom of the ninth inning lifted South Carolina to a 7-6 come-from-behind victory over No. 20 Clemson on a chilly Tuesday evening at Carolina Stadium. The win marks Carolina’s sixth consecutive victory over the Tigers and ninth victory in the last 10 games vs. Clemson. Carolina is now 21-10 on the year while the loss drops Clemson to 20-11 for the season. Both teams meet again on Wednesday night at Clemson with first pitch at Doug Kingsmore Stadium scheduled for 7 p.m.

Trailing by a run in bottom half of the ninth, South Carolina mounted a rally against Clemson reliever Casey Harman. Pinch hitter Adam Matthews got it started with a base hit to left field to lead off the frame and pinch hitter Casey Rihn followed with a walk giving Carolina a pair of runners with no outs. Jackie Bradley, Jr. then did his job as he laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt to advance both runners to second and third base. Clemson elected to intentionally walk Whit Merrifield that set the stage for Mack. The Gamecock outfielder, who also hit a game-winning homer earlier in the season at Clemson in a 3-1 win on Feb. 28, roped a 1-1 pitch for a RBI base hit to right field that scored both Matthews and Rihn and sealed a one-run victory for the Gamecocks.

Maryland 7 Towson 2

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – David Poutier went 3-for-5 with two RBIs and Mike Murphy hit a two-run home run in the first inning to lead the University of Maryland baseball team to a 7-2 victory against Towson Tuesday evening at Shipley Field.

In a game that was moved up two hours due to cold and windy weather, the Terrapins’ pitching staff limited the potent Tigers offense to one earned run on only six hits. Sophomore left-hander Adam Kolarek pitched the first four innings for Maryland, allowing one run on two hits. Brett Harman and Ian Schwalenberg pitched two innings apiece and Dan Gentzler pitched a scoreless ninth.

After a perfect top of the first inning for Kolarek, Maryland’s offense built an early lead in the bottom half. With one out, A.J. Casario was hit by a pitch and Murphy brought him home with a two-run homer to right-center field. Will Greenberg followed with a double down the right-field line to extend his hitting streak to 11 games and later scored on a balk by Towson starting pitcher Wes Shifflett.

NC State 10 UNC-Wilmington 2

RALEIGH, N.C. – NC State returned home from a disappointing series at Boston College and took its frustrations out on UNC Wilmington on Tuesday night at Doak Field at Dail Park. The 10-2 victory gives the Wolfpack a 17-15 record while the Seahawks fall to 17-11.

The victory produced a career milestone for head coach Elliott Avent, who notched career victory No. 700. Avent’s career record now stands at 700-506 in 19-plus seasons as a head coach. He is 475-295 in 12-plus seasons as head coach of the Wolfpack.

“The 700th win really doesn’t mean that much to me,” Avent said. “What mattered was watching us play the game the way it’s supposed to be played. I felt that tonight was the first time we played a complete game all year. We got excellent pitching from Cory Mazzoni and our bullpen, we played well defensively and only made one mistake all night, and we hit the ball well.”
