Here is your ACC Recap for April 4th

# 7 Miami (FL) 6 #19 Florida State 4

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The seventh-ranked University of Miami baseball team evened the series with No. 23 Florida State Saturday night, picking up a 6-4 win in front of a sold-out crowd of 3,500 at Alex Rodriguez Park at Mark Light Field.

Miami starter Chris Hernandez (3-2) picked the victory for Miami, tying a career-high with 11 strikeouts on the night. After allowing four runs through the first three innings, Hernandez settled in and kept the game in reach before Miami’s five-run sixth put the `Canes ahead for good.

Down 4-1 after 5 ½ innings, the Hurricanes not only broke up a no-hit bid by FSU starter Brian Busch, but they were able to force him out of the game and take advantage of the Seminoles’ bellpen. Scott Lawson led off the frame with a walk before Jason Hagerty hit a deep homer to left to put the `Canes down just one. After FSU turned to its bullpen, four of the next five UM batters singled. The final single came off the bat of pinch-hitter Ted Blackman and it proved to be the difference. After rolling through the right side, the ball proceeded to go under right-fielder D’Vontrey Richardson’s glove, rolling all the way to the fence to allow Harold Martinez, Yasmani Grandal and eventually Blackman to come around and score to put the `Canes up 6-4.

Duke 10 #18 Clemson 7

CLEMSON, S.C. – Andrew Wolcott turned in six strong innings in which he held No. 18 Clemson to three runs, two earned, to lead Duke to a 10-7 win over the Tigers that tied the series Saturday evening at Doug Kingsmore Stadium.

Wolcott (5-1) outdueled Clemson’s Graham Stoneburner (3-3) to pick up his third straight win over a top-25 opponent. Wolcott, who had previously beat No. 1 North Carolina and No. 6 Miami, scattered 10 Tiger hits and held Clemson (19-10, 8-6 ACC) to five hits in 17 opportunities with runners on base. Wolcott did not walk a single batter and has now distributed just seven free passes in 46 innings.

Closer Alex Hassan shut down a late Clemson rally and got the final four outs to notch his ACC-leading eighth save of the season. Hassan, who boasts a 1-2 record and a 2.08 ERA, struck out three of the six batters he faced and did not allow a run for his sixth straight scoreless outing. He also went 2-for-3 with a double and a walk from the leadoff spot and scored his team-leading 33rd run of the season.

Maryland 8 #21 Virginia 7

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Senior Dan Benick went 1-for-3 Saturday at Virginia, but his lone hit was worth four runs as Maryland’s starting center fielder crushed an eighth-inning grand slam off Cavaliers closer Matt Packer to complete a five-run fifth inning outburst and lead the University of Maryland baseball team to an 8-7 victory at tenth-ranked Virginia.

Maryland’s win snapped a 19-game losing streak to Virginia and gave the Terps their first road victory against the Cavaliers since the 1999 season. The victory was Maryland’s first over a ranked opponent this year.

The Terps (14-16, 4-10 ACC) gave starting pitcher Scott Swinson an early lead with which to work, scoring two runs off Andrew Carraway in the opening frame. David Poutier drew a leadoff walk and scored two batters later when third baseman Mike Murphy hit an 0-2 pitch over the left-center field wall. The home run moved Murphy into ninth place in school history.
