Big 12 Recap 3-27-09

The Big 12 saw the weather cause only three of the five series open play on March 27th. The rest of the teams will open up play on Saturday (weather permitting).

Southland Conference Recap 3-27-09

Sophomore first baseman Joe Sparcino went 2-for-2 with two runs and two RBI on Friday.

St. John’s and Georgetown set to break Records

St. John’s and Georgetown will get together over this weekend for a three game Big East series. The first two games of the series will be played in Washington DC at Shirley Povich Field while the game on Sunday will take place at new Citi Field in Flushing New York. The game will break the NCAA record for single game attendance as all 42,000 seats sold out in less then 45 minutes during the public offering. The previous record is 40,106 who saw the opening of Petco Park in San Diego when the San Diego State Aztecs played the Houston Cougars. Read the rest of this entry »

Scott Bittle makes his first start of the season for Ole Miss on Sunday against LSU.

Conference play is heating up in the SEC, and this weekend provides an opportunity for some of the teams to start making moves in the conference standings.  The Arkansas Razorbacks put their perfect 6-0 conference record on the line this weekend when Mississippi State invades Baum Stadium.  LSU and Ole Miss find themselves tied for second place in the SEC West, and both top fifteen teams will battle it out in the new Alex Box Stadium in Baton Rouge.  Scott Bittle will be making his first start of the season and his fourth of his career when he takes the mound for Ole Miss against the Bayou Bengals on Sunday.  Alabama hits the road for a pivotal series at Florida, who is coming off a weekend sweep of Tennessee. ACC Weekend Preview for March 27th-29th

The ACC enters it fourth weekend of play with Georgia Tech and Miami (FL) headlining the weekend action. The other big series of the weekend is Virginia heading down to Chapel Hill to take on North Carolina. All 10 Big 12 teams have conference series this weekend. The spotlight series is in Waco, where Kansas State (20-5, 1-2) takes on #11 Baylor (14-5, 3-3) in a 3-game series. Texas Tech visits #9 Texas, Kansas travels to #13 Texas A&M, #18 Oklahoma State hosts Missouri, while Nebraska heads to Norman to play Oklahoma.

Two dozen RBIs by Cody Callahan of Keene State College and a no-hitter by Tim McMenamin of Gwynedd-Mercy College have earned the pair the fourth NCAA Division III National Hitter of the Week and Pitcher of the Week honors for 2009, covering the week of March 16-22, as voted on by a panel of members from the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association.

Pac-10 Baseball Round-Up: March 25, 2009

The Pac-10 was 7-0 in games played on Wednesday.

BERKELEY, Calif. - Cal scored twice in the third inning and then exploded for seven runs in the fourth inning on the way to a 9-6 victory over Santa Clara Wednesday afternoon at Evans Diamond. The Golden Bears improved to 13-8 overall and the Broncos dropped to 10-8. The winning pitcher for Cal was sophomore right-hander Yasser Clor, who improved his record to 3-0 by throwing a career-high 5.1 innings with six hits, four runs, one earned run, two walks and two strikeouts. Sophomore right-hander Kevin Miller earned his first collegiate save by throwing the final 3.2 innings (five hits, two runs, one earned run, one walk, two strikeouts). Sophomore right fielder Mark Canha, who is leading the Bears with a .398 average, had a two-run single in the third, while senior third baseman Michael Brady, sophomore shortstop Brian Guinn, junior first baseman Blake Smith, junior second baseman Jeff Kobernus, freshman left fielder Danny Oh and junior catcher Dylan Tonneson all had RBI in the fourth inning.
