The third full week of non-conference play is on tap this week in Conference USA Baseball. Rice has a four-game series against No. 20 San Diego from Thursday-Sunday in Houston. Tulane visits No. 10 UC Irvine for a three-game set next weekend and Marshall hosts No. 21 Kent State in a mid-week matchup as C-USA teams try to prove themselves against top-notch competition. CBB Column: College Baseball becoming Fight Club?

This weekend we saw two bench clearing brawls take place with the Florida-Duquesne match-up having an incident on Friday night and UMass-Arizona got into it on Sunday afternoon. Both of these incidents were out of conference matchups and don’t have any history behind them.  Since their isn’t any history between these squads, it makes it more disturbing. Random Thoughts from the Weekend (March 9th)

I will occasionally check in throughout the season on some random thoughts on the college baseball action that has taken place over the last few days.

What is the problem with Florida State? They have lost five out of their last six games with losses to North Florida, Jacksonville, Auburn, and Boston College (twice). None of those teams are going to be contenders for a College World Series title. Read the rest of this entry »

Mississippi College junior outfielder Bo Bell (Gulfport, MS / Miss. Gulf Coast CC) went 4-for-9 with two home runs, one double and six RBIs to pace a conference-opening series win over LeTourneau. Bell also walked twice, stole a base and scored two runs.

Big Ten Players of the Week (March 9th)

Johnson led the Illini to a series victory over No. 1 LSU over the weekend, batting .500 with a .750 slugging percentage over the three-game set. In Game 1 on Friday, the catcher hit the game-winning two-run home run in the top of the ninth to give Illinois the 3-1 victory. A nearly untouchable pitching performance by UC Santa Barbara’s Mario Hollands earned him Big West Pitcher of the Week honors, while Cal State Fullerton’s freshman standout Nick Ramirez blasted a trio of long bombs in a 4-0 week to pick up Big West Player of the Week accolades.
