Profile on Kyle Gibson

kylegibsonOur good friends over at Project Prospect recently did a profile on Missouri starting pitcher Kyle Gibson. (TCBB’s Profile) He is an interesting case as he has some outstanding talent but has struggled off and on during his collegiate career.Currently, Kyle is 2-1 with a 1.29 ERA in three starts totaling 21 innings pitched. I have seen Gibson throw in person once and was less then impressed as I saw him give up five runs against a NECBL team in one inning. He has an excellent slider but it can be difficult for him to control. We have some great video of Gibson which is embedded after the jump from his season in the Cape Cod League. We have come across a few links from around the country which feature some interesting college baseball news and notes. The first article comes from Baseball America who looks at the movers and shakers who have changed their draft stock in a positive or negative way through the first couple of weeks of the season. The Tufts Daily looks at the 2009 Tufts baseball team who is looking to win the NESCAC but have Trinity College (CT) blocking their way to the championship. The Sun in Hamburg NY has a profile on University at Buffalo head coach Charlie Karstedt who is starting to turn around the program in the competitive MAC. The official Xavier athletic site has a profile on Zac Richard whose intimidating presence at the plate and on the mound. The next link of the day comes from Division 3 school Lynchburg College where Jeff Taylor broke the school record for stolen bases in only his second season. Kaohi Downing - Point Loma Nazarene

#1 Oklahoma City swept a three-game series against Rogers State, and defeated Calumet. The Stars are now 22-1, but they get their first serious challenge of the season with a series at #17 Wayland Baptist March 15-16.

#2 Lee swept Emmanuel, but trailed Trevecca Nazarene 8-6 after 6 1/2 innings. The Flames closed to 8-7 in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI single by Junior Rodriguez. The winning run came in the bottom of the eighth on an RBI single by Julian Alvarez. The Flames then lost their second game of the season while splitting a double-header with Milligan (Johnson City, TN). The loss was 2-1, and the winning run was scored when Spencer Street was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

The Flames are now 23-2. They visit Faulkner March 13-14, and Trevecca Nazarene March 17. Read the rest of this entry »

ULL upsets LSU on Wednesday

Louisiana-Lafayette and Wofford both picked up huge non-conference victories on Wednesday evening. The Ragin Cajuns of Louisiana-Lafayette picked up their victory over the third ranked LSU Tigers in Baton Rouge. The Cajuns had a 9-3 lead after the fifth inning but the LSU Tigers made a great comeback to tie the game at 9 after eight innings. Scott Hawkins of Louisiana-Lafayette ended up leading off the ninth with a home run to left field to grab back the lead at 10-9. They were able to hold on for the victory. Wofford picked up a 16-8 victory over the 28th ranked South Carolina Gamecocks. Wofford had 17 hits in the ballgame while being led by Kyle Behrendt who had three hits and five RBI. CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Sophomore right-hander Bryant Gaines struck out a career-best nine batters in six-plus innings, and All-America Dustin Ackley had two home runs among his four hits to pace No. 1 North Carolina to a 12-3 win over Appalachian State Wednesday at Boshamer Stadium. Ben Bunting’s career-best four hits matched Ackley’s effort, and Kyle Seager added three, as the Tar Heels (12-2) pounded out a season-best 20 hits. Read the rest of this entry »

The next article is about Orange Coast College baseball player Trevor McDonald has been hospitalized with a flesh eating virus for the last two weeks. Tyler Cleveland of the student paper of Southern Miss talks with Corky Palmer after Southern Miss was manhandled over the weekend by Cal-State Fullerton. The next interesting article talks about the major upset of the Netherlands over the Dominican Republic on Tuesday. Curt Smith who was an All-American at Maine a couple of years ago had a key part in the 11th inning come back. Josh Fellhauer had four hits in Cal State Fullerton's 15-5 win over Texas A&M.

The Cal State Fullerton Titans visited Olsen Field to take on the Texas A&M Aggies in a rare mid-week match-up of top ten teams. The Titans entered the contest with an eight game winning streak after impressive back-to-back weekend sweeps of Stanford and Southern Miss.
